Currently, Son La province has over 671,500 hectares of forest, of which over 72,200 hectares are special-use forests, 292,799 hectares of protective forests, and 306,571 hectares of production forests. Son La is the province with the largest forestry land area, ranking third in the country after Nghe An and Quang Nam provinces.
Number of forest fires reduced by 33% compared to 2023
On February 28, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of Son La Provincial People's Committee chaired the Conference on Signing Commitments on Forest Management, Protection and Development, Forest Fire Prevention and Control and Payment for Forest Environmental Services in 2025. Attending the conference were leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and a number of provincial departments and branches; representatives of People's Committees of districts, towns and cities.
In 2024, the Son La Provincial Forest Protection Department promptly advised the Provincial People's Committee to sign forest protection regulations between the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and the People's Committees at all district levels, between the district authorities and communes and wards, and between communes and wards and the people; consolidate and improve mass groups and teams to protect forests, prevent and fight forest fires; strengthen local inspections, develop and deploy plans and arrange forest fire prevention and fighting forces of districts, towns and cities.
Identify and supplement key areas prone to forest fires and add them to the forest fire key zoning map. Thanks to that, timely detection and prevention of damage caused by forest fires have been carried out. There were 53 forest fires in the year, a 33% decrease compared to 2023.

In sustainable forest development, the Forestry sector has completed the targets on forest development, afforestation, scattered tree planting, forest regeneration and restoration, payment for forest environmental services and other assigned plan targets. With 1,883 hectares of newly planted forest and nearly 1.8 million scattered trees, continued care and protection of regenerated forests; payment for forest environmental services was made to 39,973/40,338 forest owners, with a total payment of VND 201,599 billion, reaching 99.88%, raising the forest cover rate to 47.6%, an increase of 0.1% compared to 2023...
The fight against deforestation, illegal exploitation, trading and transportation of forest products has been strengthened. As a result, violations in the forestry sector have been detected, prevented and strictly handled according to the law. As a result, the authorities have inspected and handled 313 violations, a decrease of 35 cases, or 10% compared to 2023.

Strive for forest cover rate to reach 48.0% by 2025
With the signed commitments on forest management, protection, development, forest fire prevention and fighting, and payment for forest environmental services in 2025, Son La province strives to manage and protect existing forests well, plant 1,430 hectares of concentrated forests; regenerate 9,895 hectares of forests; plant millions of scattered trees and increase the forest cover rate to 48% in 2025.
At the same time, effectively implement the plan for collecting and spending forest environmental service fees and the management budget estimate according to the approval decision of the Provincial People's Committee and project and non-project programs to ensure compliance with current State regulations.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of Son La Provincial People's Committee emphasized that forest management, protection, development and fire prevention and control are considered important political tasks of local Party committees and authorities.
The Forest Ranger force is the core force that advises, guides, inspects, fights, prevents, and ensures compliance with forestry laws.

At the same time, the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Son La province requested all levels, sectors and People's Committees of districts, towns and cities to focus on protecting existing forest areas and preventing hotspots of illegal exploitation, trading, transportation and storage of forest products.
Promote propaganda and dissemination of knowledge and laws on forest fire prevention and control to people living in and near forest areas, raising awareness of the importance of forest protection. Functional forces need to coordinate closely with localities, closely follow the area to promptly detect and strictly handle violations in the forestry sector.
