More than 200km from the mainland, Tho Chau is a border island commune, with an important strategic position in national defense, security and marine economic development, an important outpost in the southwestern sea and island defense strategy. The island commune currently has nearly 2,000 people living mainly on aquaculture, seafood exploitation and processing, and contributing with the island forces to the task of guarding the sea and sky of the Fatherland.
President Vo Van Thuong and his delegation visited and presented gifts to officers and soldiers of Regiment 152, Military Region 9 (formerly Tho Chau Island Unit, Navy). With the characteristic of being a unit stationed in the sea and island areas, over the years, the Regiment has always strived to carry out its core political task of training and being ready to fight to firmly protect the southwestern outpost archipelago of the Fatherland in all situations. This is also the core force helping the people of Tho Chau island commune prevent and overcome the consequences of natural disasters.
Reporting to the President, the commander of Regiment 152 said that over the past time, the officers and soldiers of the Regiment have always been united and highly determined in carrying out their tasks. The unit has performed well in training and combat readiness tasks according to the instructions of superiors; at the same time, it has maintained and ensured good patrolling, guarding, maintaining social order and safety, creating conditions for people to develop the economy and society.
Speaking here, President Vo Van Thuong sent his best wishes to the officers, soldiers of the Regiment and people on Tho Chau island commune for a safe and happy Tet holiday and many achievements in the new year 2024.
The President acknowledged and highly appreciated the results of the national defense and security work that the Regiment has achieved in the past year with the support and close coordination of the people and forces of Kien Giang province as well as on Tho Chau island commune; maintaining the airspace and sea in all situations; strictly implementing the duty regime, combat readiness training, avoiding being surprised; building a strong, comprehensive, exemplary unit.
Notably, the Regiment has maintained and promoted the close relationship with the people on the island; beautified and deepened the military-civilian relationship "like fish and water", bringing strength and motivation to the people to develop the economy; coordinated with the Party Committee, government and people of the commune to contribute to building a strong political system for the island commune. The unit has done a good job of taking care of the cadres, soldiers and people in preparation for the traditional New Year, this year higher than in previous years.
Emphasizing the importance of Tho Chau island commune, with its strategic position in building and protecting the Fatherland, the President noted that the important task and top priority of the unit is to maintain sovereignty over the airspace and sea of Tho Chau island; maintain peace and happiness for the people. Constantly raise vigilance in all situations, not allowing unexpected passiveness to occur.
The President advised the officers and soldiers of Regiment 152 to further promote the fine traditions of the fighting army, the laboring army, and to care for the people with the spirit: "Whatever can be done, do your best" to serve the people, especially to do well the task of rescuing fishermen when incidents occur.
Next, the President and the delegation visited and presented gifts to officers and soldiers of Tho Chau Border Guard Station.
According to the unit's report, in recent times, officers and soldiers of Tho Chau Border Guard Station have regularly disseminated and effectively implemented border work, firmly protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands; coordinated well with functional forces to propagate and handle illegal fishing; advised on the effective implementation of the movement for the entire population to participate in protecting the sovereignty of national borders and islands. The unit also organized well the model of fishermen not participating in illegal fishing, fishermen protecting the environment. On this occasion, the unit maintained the patrol, guard, and combat readiness regime; coordinated to ensure social order and safety so that people could celebrate the Lunar New Year happily and safely.
Presenting gifts and encouraging officers and soldiers of Tho Chau Border Guard Station, and recording the unit's golden book of tradition, President Vo Van Thuong highly appreciated and commended the achievements that the unit has made, contributing to firmly protecting the sovereignty of the national border and territory. The President believes that the officers and soldiers will continue to promote the heroic tradition of the Vietnam Border Guard, always be united, intelligent, creative, brave, and excellently complete all assigned tasks.
President visits and presents Tet gifts to people on Tho Chau island commune
Over the past time, the Party Committee, the government and the people of Tho Chau island commune have always been united, taking advantage of the available potential and strengths to develop the economy with the core sector being fishing and seafood processing. Thanks to that, infrastructure has been invested in, repaired, upgraded and renewed roads, better serving the needs of the people on the island.
However, the people of Tho Chau island commune are also facing many difficulties and challenges, especially the increasingly depleted seafood resources; high prices of consumer goods because they are mainly imported from the mainland; and difficult transportation. There is only one boat to the island every five days, making it difficult to provide support in the event of natural disasters and floods.
Wishing a Happy New Year to the Party Committee, government and people of Tho Chau island commune, President Vo Van Thuong acknowledged the important achievements of the commune in all fields. The socio-economic situation and people's lives have been constantly improved; the rate of poor and near-poor households is only below 1%.
Praising the spirit of solidarity and solving well the arising demands of the people in daily life, the President also requested the Party Committee and the government of Tho Chau island commune to solve well the issues of land and housing for the people; ensure the constructions serving fishing at sea, and the conditions for people to avoid storms. Reorganize the planning of the island commune with appropriate land use purposes so that each person and each family coming to the island can settle down; strive for the island commune to have no poor households.
Emphasizing the unique geographical features of the island commune with a large forest coverage rate, the President requested that the local government and people, in addition to economic development, pay special attention to protecting and managing the ecological environment and resources.
Noting that special attention should be paid to the children's education, because there is currently no high school in the commune, the President requested Kien Giang province and Phu Quoc city to consider supporting this issue. In addition, it is necessary to research and soon implement a combined military-civilian medical model to better care for the people's health.
In the immediate future, President Vo Van Thuong instructed the commune authorities to take good care of people to celebrate the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin with the spirit: Every family must have Tet; promote the good traditions of the nation, solidarity, love, sharing, helping each other to overcome difficulties, not leaving anyone behind.
Also on the morning of January 20, President Vo Van Thuong and the delegation offered incense at Tho Chau Temple to commemorate the sacrifices of heroic martyrs for the country's independence and freedom and more than 500 innocent people killed by the Khmer Rouge in the fight to protect the island's sovereignty in 1975.
