Tay Tu is one of the largest flower growing areas in Hanoi, supplying fresh flowers to the capital and surrounding provinces.
Every year, around the 10th and 11th lunar months, flower growers in Tay Tuu start to "feed electricity" to their flowers so they can bloom in time for Tet.
This is a way to induce flowering for harvest at the right time, according to the grower's wishes.
Normally, flower growers will use small fluorescent bulbs with a capacity of 15 - 20W to help regulate the growth of chrysanthemums.
The lighting will start from 6pm to 5am the next morning, lasting continuously for 30-45 days. Most of the gardens that are lit are growing chrysanthemums, and growers will use their many years of experience to watch the flowers bloom in time for Tet.
You have to keep the flowers "sleeping" under the lights because chrysanthemums are heat-resistant flowers, and 8 hours of sunlight a day is not enough for the flowers to grow. Keeping the lights on all night will provide enough light for the flowers to grow easily.
Mr. Dat, a long-time chrysanthemum grower, said: "To know when the flowers will bloom and to time the lights to bloom in time for Tet is very difficult, requiring a lot of experience and meticulousness. Currently, my family is growing more than 40,000 chrysanthemums, hoping that this year's flowers will be beautiful and have a good price."
In addition to hanging lights, Mr. Dat also has to stay up all night every day to watch the garden, protecting the flowers from pests such as slugs, worms, and rats. " At this time, when flower prices are still cheap, not many people come out to watch the garden at night. But near Tet, when flower prices increase, almost every house has someone staying up to watch the flowers. Because if the flower garden is damaged, the damage is huge, " said Mr. Dat.
" This year, my family lost several gardens due to super typhoon Yagi. I had to encourage everyone in the family to work together to rebuild in time for Tet. So this year, my family planted many types of flowers such as chrysanthemums, roses, and lilies to supply the Lunar New Year and full moon markets, hoping to make up for the losses, " said Mr. Cuong, the owner of a flower garden in Tay Tuu.
White chrysanthemums, yellow chrysanthemums, lilies and roses are the most commonly grown flowers in Tay Tuu flower village.
To prepare for Tet, many households have planted chrysanthemums since half a month ago.
The flower gardens are lit up and sparkle under the night sky.
The magical scenery of Tay Tuu flower growing area surprises and delights anyone who passes by.
