Egg prices have dropped sharply.

Báo Công thươngBáo Công thương19/02/2025

Humid weather makes it difficult to store eggs for long periods, and coupled with oversupply, the period before and after the Lunar New Year is usually when egg prices are at their lowest of the year.

Egg prices drop during the season.

At some local markets in Hanoi , the price of chicken eggs is currently 2,000-2,200 VND per egg, a relatively low price compared to other times of the year. Ms. Le Thuy (Phuong Mai Ward, Dong Da District, Hanoi) said that her family usually buys chicken eggs at the local market. Before Tet (Lunar New Year), the retail price of chicken eggs at the market was commonly 2,500 VND per egg, but now it has decreased by 300-500 VND per egg. Buying 20 eggs will save her around 5,000 VND. She said the price drop is not surprising, as it happens almost every year around this time.

Not only in local markets, but also on many streets in Hanoi such as To Huu, Huynh Thuc Khang, Nguyen Khang, Nguyen Phong Sac, etc., there are stalls selling free-range chicken eggs at surprisingly cheap prices. Many stalls display price tags directly at just 65,000 VND/30 eggs, 100,000 VND/50 eggs... The prices are so low that many people stop to buy them.

During these days, in apartment complex markets or online sales groups, free-range chicken eggs are being widely advertised at similar low prices, such as 65,000 VND/30 eggs, 70,000 VND/30 eggs with home delivery...

According to experts, the current drop in egg prices is due to humid weather, making it difficult to store eggs for long periods. Meanwhile, according to egg traders, the period before and after the Lunar New Year is usually when egg prices are lowest. This is because production for the Tet season ends at this time, and suppliers to confectionery companies and collective kitchens reduce their orders. In addition, market demand decreases due to the extended Tet holiday. However, poultry continue to lay eggs regularly, so the surplus of eggs that need to be preserved is perfectly normal.

At the beginning of the year, businesses and services are always slower than at other times. Coupled with leftover stock from the Tet holiday when workers were off work and people tended to attend festivals, egg consumption is almost nonexistent. Every year, it takes several months at the beginning of the year for the market to gradually stabilize again.

Farmers face losses.

Meanwhile, according to Mr. Tran Van Manh, a poultry farm owner in Kinh Mon ( Hai Duong ), the price of poultry eggs has been quite volatile in recent years. At its peak, the price reached nearly 2,800 VND/egg, while at its lowest point, it was only slightly over 1,000 VND/egg, depending on the type. However, if the hens lay eggs at a high rate, the price of 1,500 VND/egg is only enough to break even.

According to Mr. Tran Van Manh, over the past month, both Egyptian chicken eggs and red chicken eggs have been priced at 1,300 VND per egg. Despite the sharp drop in price, eggs are still difficult to sell. Currently, egg prices show no signs of recovering.

Ms. Dao Thi Lan, a poultry farmer in Ly Nhan ( Ha Nam province ), said that with 10,000 laying hens, her family harvests about 5,000-6,000 eggs per day. However, the continuously falling price of chicken eggs has left her family facing losses.

Small traders and farmers alike believe that egg prices will gradually rise again in the near future if purchasing power improves. Despite the attractive prices at the moment, consumers should carefully check the origin and quality of products when buying. Choosing reputable stores will ensure food safety and contribute to maintaining market stability.

According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2024, the total poultry population nationwide increased to 575.1 million birds, including both broiler and laying hens. Egg production increased by 5%, soaring to 20.2 billion eggs. Poultry egg prices remained stable last year, with chicken eggs priced at 1,800-2,100 VND/egg and duck eggs ranging from 2,200-2,800 VND/egg.

From the end of June 2024, chicken egg prices increased slightly to 2,100-2,150 VND/egg, while duck egg prices tended to decrease slightly. In the last months of the year, the price of this superfood fluctuated depending on the time and region, but there were no significant changes. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also forecasts that poultry egg production in 2025 will reach 21 billion eggs - the highest level ever.

After the Lunar New Year, many users on social media groups rushed to sell chicken eggs at "record low" prices. Some fan pages advertised eggs for 100,000 VND for 60 eggs, or 159,000 VND for 100 eggs.
