In humid weather, eggs are difficult to keep for long, and supply exceeds demand, so the time before and after Tet is usually the time when egg prices are cheapest of the year.
Eggs in season price drop
At some traditional markets in Hanoi, the price of chicken eggs is at 2,000 - 2,200 VND/egg, a fairly low price compared to other times of the year. Ms. Le Thuy (Phuong Mai, Dong Da, Hanoi) - said that her family often buys chicken eggs at traditional markets. If before Tet, the retail price of chicken eggs at the market was commonly at 2,500 VND/egg, now it has decreased by 300 - 500 VND/egg. She will save about 5,000 VND for 2 dozen eggs. It is not surprising that the price of eggs has decreased, according to Ms. Le Thuy, almost every year at this time the price of chicken eggs has decreased.

Not only at traditional markets, but also on many streets in Hanoi such as To Huu, Huynh Thuc Khang, Nguyen Khang, Nguyen Phong Sac,... there are places selling eggs at surprisingly cheap prices. Many places have direct price tags from only 65,000 VND/30 eggs, 100,000 VND/50 eggs... The prices are so cheap that many people stop to buy them.
Also during these days, in apartment markets or online sales groups, local chicken eggs are being sold quite a lot at cheap prices such as 65,000 VND/30 eggs, 70,000 VND/30 eggs delivered to your home...
According to experts, the current decrease in egg prices is due to the humid weather, which makes it difficult to preserve eggs for a long time. Meanwhile, according to small traders specializing in egg trading, before and after Tet is usually the time when egg prices are the cheapest of the year. Because at this time, production for the Tet season ends, the supply to companies, confectionery businesses, and collective kitchens reduces imports. In addition, market demand also decreases due to the long Tet holiday. Meanwhile, poultry still lay eggs regularly, so the amount of eggs left over and having to be preserved is completely normal.
At the beginning of the year, the service of shops is always slower than at other times. In addition, the remaining inventory from the days of Tet when workers are off work, people also tend to go to festivals, so there is almost no egg consumption. Every year, it takes the first few months of the year for the market to gradually stabilize again.
Farmers face losses
Meanwhile, according to Mr. Tran Van Manh - owner of a livestock farm in Kinh Mon (Hai Duong), in recent years, the price of poultry eggs has been quite unstable. The peak price is nearly 2,800 VND/egg, while the low point price is just over 1,000 VND/egg depending on the type. Meanwhile, if the hen lays at a high rate, the price must be 1,500 VND/egg to break even.
According to Mr. Tran Van Manh, in the past month, both Egyptian eggs and red eggs have been priced at 1,300 VND/egg. Even though egg prices have dropped sharply, they are still very difficult to sell. Currently, egg prices have not shown any signs of increasing again.
Ms. Dao Thi Lan - a farmer in Ly Nhan (Ha Nam) - said that with 10,000 laying hens, her family harvests about 5,000 - 6,000 eggs per day. However, the price of chicken eggs has continuously dropped, causing her family to face losses.
Traders and farmers agree that egg prices will gradually increase again in the near future if purchasing power improves. Although prices are attractive at the moment, consumers should carefully check the origin and quality of products when purchasing. Choosing reputable stores will ensure food safety and contribute to maintaining market stability.
According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2024, the total poultry herd in the country will increase to 575.1 million, including broilers and laying hens. Egg production increased by 5%, soaring to 20.2 billion eggs. Poultry egg prices remained stable over the past year. Of which, chicken eggs cost 1,800-2,100 VND/egg, duck eggs ranged from 2,200-2,800 VND/egg.
From the end of June 2024, the price of chicken eggs increased slightly to 2,100-2,150 VND/egg, while the price of duck eggs tended to decrease slightly. In the last months of the year, the price of this superfood fluctuated up and down depending on the time and region, but there were no significant fluctuations. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also forecast that poultry egg production in 2025 will reach 21 billion eggs - the highest level ever.
After Tet, on social media groups, many users competed to post chicken eggs for sale at "record low" prices. Some fanpages advertised chicken eggs for 100,000 VND for 60 eggs, 159,000 VND for 100 eggs. |
