After the Tet holiday, many students in the mountainous areas of Nghe An have not returned to school, causing the situation of absenteeism to continue. Faced with this situation, local authorities, commune police and teachers have had to travel to villages and houses to persuade children to go to school.
Students dropping out of school after Tet is not a new phenomenon, but this year it has occurred in many localities, making it difficult to maintain student numbers. The government and education sector are working hard to find solutions to bring students back to class.
In Bao Thang commune, Ky Son border district (Nghe An), many students are still absent because their families are busy with ceremonies such as weddings and funerals. Teachers and commune officials have crossed muddy roads, through Tha Lang, Ca Da, Xao Va villages... to persuade parents to bring their children back to school. According to Mr. Le Duong Le, Vice Principal of Bao Thang Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, the entire Bao Thang commune has 444 students, 100% of whom are children of the Kho Mu ethnic group. After the holiday, 28 students have not returned to class, so the school has to send teachers to their families to persuade them to come to class.
Not only in Ky Son, at Luong Minh Primary Boarding School (Luong Minh Commune, Tuong Duong District), after Tet, 50 students were absent, mainly due to difficult family circumstances and lack of attention from parents. To solve this situation, Luong Minh Commune Police coordinated with teachers to cross mountains and wade through streams to each village to persuade the families.
Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Van Hung, Chief of Luong Minh Commune Police, said that five students at risk of dropping out of school have returned to class thanks to the efforts of commune police officers and teachers. With the perseverance of the commune police force and teachers, the awareness of parents and students in mountainous areas has changed. To date, 50 students of Luong Minh Primary Boarding School have returned to school.
According to the leader of the Department of Education and Training of Tuong Duong district, as of February 14, there are still 117 students in the district who have not returned to school. The education sector is continuing to coordinate with the government and schools to propagate and mobilize, ensuring that students return to class soon, without interrupting their studies.
