The US dollar edged up against the euro on Tuesday, heading for its first weekly gain this month, as investors booked profits from the euro’s recent rally.

The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), stopped at 104.09 - up 0.16 VND compared to March 22, 2025.

The USD has increased for the third consecutive session in the basket of 6 major international payment currencies. Experts said that the USD has strengthened because the market expects that the US economy can still operate positively, despite the recent retaliatory tariffs imposed by the US and many countries.

Despite concerns about rising inflation, Mr. Trump's tax policies are attracting investors to pour capital into the US, in order to benefit from the tariff policy.

The USD is expected to continue to be under pressure as inflation increases due to trade tensions, as well as the US Federal Reserve (Fed) cutting interest rates later this year. In particular, economic and employment data to be released in late March and early April will have a strong impact on the direction of the USD.

Fed policymakers have signaled two 25 basis point rate cuts by the end of the year, the same median forecast as three months ago.

“While the next moves are yet to be determined, the most optimistic scenario we can think of is that tariffs will likely spur a recovery in the greenback,” said Jonas Goltermann, deputy chief markets economist at Capital Economics.

In contrast, the euro fell 0.3% to $1.08223, heading for a 0.6% weekly decline, its first weekly decline since February 28.

The US dollar rose 0.3% to 149.21 yen.

The pound fell 0.3% to $1.293, a day after the BoE warned investors not to expect further cuts, given the uncertainty surrounding the global and UK economies.
