Since early March, the Vietnam U17 team has gathered all 34 players, training at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center, Hanoi, aiming for the 2025 AFC U17 Finals, taking place in Saudi Arabia from April 3 to 20.

According to plan, before participating in the tournament, the team will have a training trip and 2 friendly matches in Oman from March 23 to 29.

On the afternoon of March 13, the U17 Vietnam coaching staff began the first round of squad selection. Four names said goodbye to the team: goalkeeper Ly Xuan Hoa (PVF Center), player Tran Hoang Viet (Hanoi Club), Nguyen Van Phuc (Hong Linh Ha Tinh) and Thomas Mai Veeren (HV Quick).

Notable among these is Vietnamese-American midfielder Thomas Mai Veeren - recalled from the Dutch Fourth Division.

According to Tuoi Tre Online 's investigation, the U17 Vietnam coaching staff assessed that Thomas Mai Veeren has great development potential , but has not been able to quickly integrate with the team, leading to the inability to compete for a position, suitable for the goal of competing at the 2025 U17 Asian Cup.

The U17 Vietnam coaching staff hopes that Thomas Mai Veeren will continue to progress steadily in his career and will continue to closely monitor his performance in the Netherlands.

In September 2024, U17 Vietnam under coach Cristiano Roland also called up a Vietnamese-American player, Maxwell James Peereboom, born in 2008 in Ho Chi Minh City, has Vietnamese nationality and is living with his parents in Australia.

Similar to Thomas Mai, Maxwell James could not compete for a starting position in defense at that time.

In the first days of the Vietnam U17 team's training session, head coach Cristiano Roland affirmed: "In the list of 34 players, I called up a number of players for the first time. Through training sessions, the team will gradually shorten the list until it has the best force for the 2025 AFC U17 Championship. The whole team is determined and focused to achieve the highest goal for Vietnamese football."
