The Vietnamese team began training today (March 12) to prepare for the international friendly match against Cambodia on March 19, in addition to the opening match against Laos on March 25 in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. The matches will take place at Binh Duong Province Stadium.
Both Laos and Cambodia are not equal opponents to the Vietnamese team. However, the danger for coach Kim Sang-sik and his team in this training session does not lie in the opponent, but in the invisible opponent called physical strength.

From September 2024 to now, Vietnamese players have gone through a period of continuous training and competition at clubs and the national team. Specifically, at the club, the players have played 16 matches in the V-League and at least 1 to 2 matches in the National Cup. For teams playing in the Southeast Asian Cup C1 or Asian Cup C2, the number of matches is added 5 matches (with Hanoi Police Club and Thanh Hoa Club), 8 matches (with Nam Dinh Club). Thus, just counting at the home team, the teams have played from 17 to 25 matches.
At the national team level, in addition to 8 matches at the AFF Cup 2024, the players played 6 friendly matches (from September to November 2024). The total number of matches for the Vietnamese team is 14.
Thus, from September 2024 to now, a Vietnamese player can play an average of 30 to 35 matches, an average of 5 to 6 matches per month. This is not a large number, if compared to the standards of developed football. However, the national players have trained and competed continuously for the past 6 months, without any break lasting more than 2 weeks. The longest break for the players was during Tet at the end of January.
The high competition density and irregular movements have affected the players' movement rhythm. Without careful preparation, Coach Kim Sang-sik's students are prone to injury or physical decline.
TEACHER K IM'S CALCULATION
The Vietnamese team has significantly improved their physical fitness after 10 days of training in Korea. The high-volume exercise program designed according to K-League standards was later acknowledged by the players as being heavy, but helping the whole team become stronger and more durable. The proof is that at the AFF Cup 2024 , the Vietnamese team scored 9 goals in the final minutes.
With the Korean coaching team, coming from a football background that emphasizes physical strength and fighting spirit, coach Kim Sang-sik has made careful calculations. Most likely, Mr. Kim and his assistant will let his students "release" the amount of exercise, practice lightly and mainly relax in the first days to have a comfortable mentality. The Vietnamese team really needs to relax after a period of enduring pressure, having to exert themselves to play at the AFF Cup 2024. After relaxing and regaining balance, the Vietnamese team will need to increase the training intensity to a high level, to be mentally ready for the match with Laos.
To reduce the load on the Vietnamese team, in addition to a reasonable physical and tactical training program, coach Kim Sang-sik also needs to make the most of "group 2", with reserve players to be used appropriately in conjunction with the official squad. At the AFF Cup, Mr. Kim's skillful and flexible use of players helps the Vietnamese team to be both difficult to predict, while saving physical strength for key players and avoiding overload.
However, the Vietnamese team still needs a stronger impression from the reserve force. The team's mainstays (mostly born from 1995 to 1998) can play well for another 1 or 2 years. But to calculate the long-term future, the Vietnamese team really needs the continuation of younger, stronger players. Youth means aspiration, and physical strength can be improved if there is the right training method. Striker Bui Vi Hao is an example, with 18 matches for Binh Duong Club since the beginning of the tournament (in V-League and National Cup), but still performed well in the AFF Cup with 6 matches. Coach Kim Sang-sik needs such warriors to calculate for the difficult road ahead.
