While the resistance war against French colonialism was at its most fierce and intense stage, on July 27, 1947, President Ho Chi Minh directed to choose one day of the year as "War Invalids Day" to express his respect and deep gratitude to those who did not spare their blood and bones, sacrificed and devoted themselves to the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, and to the happiness of the people.

Since July 1955, the Party and State decided to change "National War Invalids Day" to War Invalids and Martyrs Day to recognize the great sacrifices of compatriots and soldiers nationwide for the glorious victory of the nation.

Since 1975, according to the Directive of the Secretariat, July 27 every year has officially become the "Day of War Invalids and Martyrs" of the whole country.

According to preliminary statistics, the whole country has a total of 1,146,250 martyrs, of which 191,605 people sacrificed in the resistance war against France, 849,018 people sacrificed in the resistance war against America, and 105,627 people died in other campaigns to protect the Fatherland (such as the southwestern border war, the northern border war, the war to protect the sovereignty of the sea and islands...).

In addition, up to now:

- Nearly 800,000 war invalids and beneficiaries of war invalid policies nationwide.

Quang Nam is the province with the most martyrs, with 65,000 people sacrificed in the wars. In addition, Quang Nam province also has more than 30,000 wounded soldiers.

The district with the most martyrs in the country is Dien Ban district (Quang Nam province) with more than 19,800 martyrs.

During the resistance war against France, against the US, the war to protect the Fatherland... there were about more than 4 million Vietnamese civilians who died or were injured for life due to bombs, bullets, and enemy killings...

According to statistics from the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs as of July 2022, the country currently has more than 3,200 martyrs' cemeteries and more than 3,000 works honoring martyrs. There are martyrs' cemeteries in all 63 provinces, cities and localities.

- There are 9,000,000 meritorious people nationwide.

- There are over 127,000 Vietnamese Heroic Mothers whose husbands and children died in wars to protect the Fatherland.

+ Mother Nguyen Thi Thu in Quang Nam has a husband, nine children, one son-in-law, and two grandchildren who are martyrs;

- Nearly 111,000 revolutionaries and resistance fighters were arrested, imprisoned, and tortured by the enemy in famous prisons such as Hoa Lo, Son La, Lao Bao, Con Dao, Phu Quoc...

The above figures show us the value of peace. Spending a day to honor those sacrifices and losses is certainly not enough. But taking concrete, practical actions to arouse gratitude, arouse pride and responsibility of the community for those sacrifices and losses is extremely necessary...
