North Korea shelling Yeongpyeong Island on November 23, 2010
According to Yonhap, the South Korean military ordered an emergency evacuation of civilians on the western frontline island of Yeongpyeong, while the North Korean military made "provocative moves" militarily.
The order to evacuate to the bomb shelter was issued at 12:02 and again at 12:30 on January 5, according to the local office.
"We issued the evacuation order after receiving a call from a military unit saying they were carrying out a sea attack on Yeongpyeong Island in response to a provocation from the North," Yonhap quoted an unnamed South Korean official as saying.
Also according to Yonhap, the South Korean military later announced that North Korea fired more than 200 artillery shells from its west coast towards the island.
"North Korea fired about 200 artillery shells near Yeonpyeong Island," a defense official said at an emergency meeting.
There are currently no reports of casualties or damage on the South Korean side as the artillery shells fell in waters north of the Northern Limit Line (NLL), the maritime border between the two Koreas.
On November 23, 2010, North Korean troops shelled Yeonpyeong Island, killing two South Korean marines and two civilians. The incident marked the most serious clash between the two countries since the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.
