On the afternoon of October 15, Pyongyang blew up several sections of the inter-Korean road north of the Military Demarcation Line, according to Yonhap citing information from the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff.
North Korea blows up cross-border road, South Korean military fires warning shots
South Korea fired warning shots in response to North Korea's move. In addition, the South Korean army has increased reconnaissance and surveillance activities and is ready to respond to any situation.
Seoul warned Pyongyang yesterday that it was preparing to destroy the route.
The inter-Korean road on the North side
Tensions on the Korean peninsula have been rising following joint military exercises between the US and South Korea and North Korea’s frequent missile tests. The two sides have also been embroiled in a dispute over allegations that South Korea has deployed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) near the capital Pyongyang.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on October 14 chaired a meeting of military and security officials to discuss how to respond to South Korea's increasingly provocative behavior, which the KCNA news agency accused of infringing on North Korea's sovereignty.
The meeting came after Pyongyang accused South Korea of being responsible for the drones dropping leaflets filled with "inflammatory rumors and rubbish", and warned on October 13 that it would consider it a "declaration of war" if any more drones were spotted, according to AFP.
The South Korean military denied being behind the UAV flights, according to AFP.
