The Trump administration has just laid off more than 1,300 employees of the Department of Education, a move seen as a step forward in its plan to streamline and eventually dissolve the agency. However, the plan has faced strong opposition from Congress and public opinion.

According to Yonhap , the US Department of Education announced on March 11 (local time) its decision to cut 1,315 employees.

The move halves the number of employees at the department in less than two months since President Donald Trump took office. Previously, 572 employees had accepted layoffs and 63 probationary employees had their contracts terminated.

In addition, the US Department of Education also announced the termination of office leases in major cities such as New York, Boston, Chicago and Cleveland.

However, agency officials said the changes would not affect the allocation of federal education funding, support for low-income households or the management of student loans.

According to the AP news agency, the latest move is to fulfill the US leader's commitment to reduce the size of the federal government. Not only the Department of Education, but many other agencies such as the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Social Security Administration will also face large-scale personnel cuts.

Linda McMahon, the US Secretary of Education, also warned of major cuts shortly after taking office, emphasizing that the agency's ultimate mission is to transfer educational policy-making authority to state governments to streamline the apparatus and increase autonomy for each region.

During his campaign, Mr. Trump pledged to reform the Department of Education, arguing that the agency needed to be streamlined and given more autonomy to individual states. As a result, Mr. Trump has taken a number of measures since taking office, including cutting staff, cutting grants, and ending some programs.

Still, Trump’s plan to restructure the Department of Education faces many hurdles. Since it was created by Congress in 1979, the agency cannot be abolished by executive order. With the Senate and House divided, passing Trump’s plan will be difficult.

The American public also expressed disagreement with the proposal. Recent polls show that about two-thirds of respondents oppose closing the Department of Education.
