Ukraine is ready to agree to a 30-day ceasefire, the flow of US military and intelligence aid to Kiev is resumed, leaving the ball now in Russia's court.

This is a "dizzying" turn of events after the tense argument between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his US counterpart Donald Trump at the White House on February 28, as well as a change in Washington's strategy, from pressuring Kiev to accept a peace deal, to asking Moscow to make a commitment.

Speaking in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he hoped Russia would accept the peace deal “so we can move on to the second phase, which is the real negotiations.” Now, for the first time, Moscow is being asked to make a commitment, although it is unclear what would happen if it agreed.

According to The Guardian , Russia is also pushing for a ceasefire, but the Kremlin wants Ukraine to hold elections before any comprehensive talks on the Eastern European country’s future territory and security. Meanwhile, Kiev wants strong security guarantees to prevent the conflict from erupting again, including the deployment of European peacekeepers, something Moscow has so far opposed.

Until the US-Ukraine meeting came to fruition, the dynamics on the ground did not seem to favor a ceasefire, as both countries stepped up attacks on each other's territory.

Ukraine’s decision to launch a drone attack on Russian territory in the early hours of March 11 demonstrates that Kiev’s military capabilities have not been significantly degraded despite the suspension of military intelligence supplies from the United States. It is also a strong attempt to put pressure on Moscow to agree to a peace deal.

Meanwhile, on March 10, Russia also increased the scale of its attacks, launching 126 Shahed UAVs, along with many other devices into Ukraine, and deploying a ballistic missile. According to The Guardian , the situation on the ground is tilting in Moscow’s favor, but it has not yet been able to bring a decisive advantage.

Meanwhile, with the current developments, the diplomatic momentum is now leaning towards Kiev. About $1 billion in US military aid to Ukraine could be “unleashed”, intelligence sharing resumed, although no one can be sure how long this will last due to President Trump’s unpredictability.

In any case, there has been a marked shift in Kiev's attitude towards negotiations and now all eyes are on Moscow's decision.
