(Dan Tri) - Mr. Pham Minh Thanh (born in 1994) is a former student of the first course at Newton Secondary and High School (belonging to the Newton Inter-level School System, EQuest Education Group) and is also a young doctor in the US who completed his PhD program at the age of 27.

Young PhD with passion for socio-economic research

Sharing his feelings about being a successful young PhD in the US, Mr. Pham Minh Thanh (Hanoi) confided: "I am proud that I was able to complete the goal I set. The path I chose and the efforts in that journey have reaped many successful results, but what I appreciate most is the process of trying and growing up every day.

My time studying and doing research also gave me the opportunity to meet and get to know many friends who are more outstanding than me. Their example has shown me that success is just the beginning of a journey. We need to try to improve our knowledge and skills even more."

In 2012, Minh Thanh decided to study at Binghamton University (USA). During this period, because he did not have a clear career direction, he chose to study economics - a popular major and of interest to many students at that time.

"At first, choosing economics seemed like a random decision. But later on, I realized it was a wise choice. The learning process gradually aroused in me a passion for learning more deeply about the economic aspects of social issues.

From the nature of economics being human behavior in the face of limited resources, to the issues of gender inequality in labor. Each lesson, each research broadens my perspective and understanding of this field," Mr. Pham Minh Thanh shared.

Pham Minh Thanh’s journey to becoming a doctorate was not easy. During the last 1-2 years of the program, Thanh had to compete in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. Social isolation, heavy and massive research workload were the challenges that Pham Minh Thanh had to overcome.

Thanks to the encouragement from family, friends, help from colleagues, professors and life skills trained since high school, Pham Minh Thanh quickly managed to control his emotions, calm himself down and complete his doctoral thesis on time.

"Not only emotional management skills, my time at Newton also gave me the opportunity to develop other soft skills that I believe have contributed to my success today.

When preparing my PhD application, I was required to have letters of recommendation from professors. The communication and relationship-building skills that I learned at Newton came in handy. Thanks to my good communication skills, I was able to maintain close relationships with lecturers. From there, I received prestigious letters of recommendation," said Pham Minh Thanh.

Although he was still studying for his bachelor's degree, thanks to his well-prepared application and essay, Minh Thanh was admitted directly to become a PhD student. In addition, he also received a full scholarship for the university's economics program with a 5-year financial support package including a full scholarship and living expenses.

After completing his PhD, Thanh returned to Vietnam. He is currently a researcher at the Mekong Development Research Institute (Hanoi) and a lecturer at RMIT University (Hanoi). He is also researching and interested in issues of sustainable development in agriculture and the role of gender in the labor market.

A solid foundation to nurture talent

Mr. Pham Minh Thanh is a first-year student of Newton Secondary and High School (part of the Newton Inter-level School System, a member of the EQuest Education Group). Sharing the reason why he decided to entrust his high school journey to the school, Mr. Thanh confided: "With the goal of studying abroad already determined in advance, I focused on choosing an educational environment that would give me many opportunities to use and practice English regularly and effectively.

Furthermore, I want to not only improve my professional knowledge but also develop important soft skills and life skills. Therefore, Newton School has become the optimal choice for me to pursue this development goal."

Before studying at Newton School, Thanh considered himself an introvert and quite quiet. However, after the process of contact and training at the school, he discovered a completely different version of himself - a person with confident communication skills and easy to integrate.

At this high school, Thanh was not only equipped with academic knowledge from books, but also nurtured with important soft skills such as leadership and communication skills. These experiences contributed significantly to his later success.

"Before, I was a rather shy boy. But Newton School opened up experiences for me that I never thought I could have," Thanh shared.

Mr. Pham Minh Thanh still remembers the moment when he was a shy student and was able to confidently stand in front of a crowd to give an award speech in English for the 2010 Hanoi Open Math Olympiad in front of many excellent students from top high schools in Hanoi and other provinces - something that seemed beyond the imagination of him and his family.

Teachers at school are the ones who supported and guided Minh Thanh, helping him become more confident: "In my learning journey, I cannot choose a special lecture. Because each lesson has its own meaning. Collectively, they have created the person and success I have today. Every class, every lecture, whether small or big, has played an important role in my development, like indispensable pieces in the picture of life."

Ms. Le Thi Bich Dung, founder of Newton Secondary and High School, emphasized: "Each generation of successful students is the driving force for Newton School to continue to innovate and perfect its educational philosophy. At the same time, we affirm the school's commitment to creating an optimal and effective learning environment for students."
