Vietnam's rice export price surpasses India's, closely follows Thailand's

Việt NamViệt Nam25/03/2025

Over the past two weeks, Vietnam's rice export prices have maintained a slight increase of 1-4 USD per trading session, while Thai and Indian rice prices have tended to decrease slightly, narrowing the gap in rice export prices between countries.

According to an update from the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the export price of 5% broken rice from Vietnam on March 24 returned to the 400 USD/ton mark, closely following the export price of the same type of rice from Thailand (401 USD/ton) and 4 USD/ton higher than the same type of rice from India.

Market experts analyzed that recently, Vietnam's rice export transactions have been slow because large import markets such as the Philippines and Indonesia have bought little.

In particular, the Philippines - a market that accounts for nearly 50% of Vietnam's rice export turnover - has been applying many policies to regulate the rice market in recent years. Accordingly, this country regulates the ceiling price of retail rice and prohibits labeling to distinguish imported and domestic rice.

At the same time, the Philippines also diversified its supply sources and boosted domestic production.

As of mid-March 2025, the Philippines' rice imports decreased by nearly 50% compared to the same period in 2024.

In early March, the Prime Minister requested ministries and sectors to take action to ensure the balance between domestic rice supply and demand and promote sustainable rice production, trading and export activities.

Rice trading enterprises have been given favorable conditions to access capital to purchase and temporarily store rice to serve long-term export plans, which has contributed to reducing the decline in rice prices.

At present, the provinces in the Mekong Delta are entering the peak of the winter-spring rice harvest, with abundant supply.

After many days of increase, the price of paddy and raw rice purchased at the field on March 25 reversed and decreased.

According to the update from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang province, currently, IR 504 raw rice has decreased by 150 VND/kg, fluctuating at 7,700-7,800 VND/kg; OM 380 raw rice has decreased by 150 VND/kg, fluctuating at 7,500-7,600 VND/kg; 5451 raw rice has fluctuated at 8,600-8,750 VND/kg; OM 380 finished rice has fluctuated at 8,800-9,000 VND/kg; IR 504 finished rice has fluctuated at 9,500-9,700 VND/kg.

Similar to rice, the current price of fresh OM 5451 rice has decreased by 100 VND/kg, fluctuating between 5,700-5,900 VND/kg; the price of fresh Dai Thom 8 rice has decreased by 100 VND/kg, fluctuating between 6,400-6,500 VND/kg; the price of fresh OM 18 rice has decreased by 100 VND/kg, fluctuating between 6,400-6,600 VND/kg.

Fresh OM 380 rice increased by 300 VND/kg, fluctuating at 5,500-5,800 VND/kg; Nang Hoa 9 rice was at 6,300-6,500 VND/kg./.
