9x brings Vietnamese technology to conquer the world

Meeting IT engineer Hoang Khac Hieu on a cold rainy day in Hanoi could not lessen the “heat” of the story of the Dubai City Hall IOT Platform project. The “heat” of the dry desert climate and the “heat” of competitive pressure and project progress, according to Mr. Hieu, “came” right after receiving the information.

As Head of Development Department 2 of the Government Solution Center - Viettel Enterprise Solutions Corporation, the engineer born in 1996, urgently outlined plans with tasks, connections, and coordination within the unit, as well as with the customer.

Messages, calls and many online meetings over thousands of kilometers have enriched the information, field survey data and customer requirements and desires. Mr. Hieu and his colleagues focused their efforts on analyzing, evaluating and providing optimal technological solutions, "our products scratch the right itch of customers".

During their time in Dubai - known as the "city of gold", Mr. Hieu's group worked diligently, taking advantage of every day and every hour to carry out many tasks at the same time.

The goal is to provide optimal products in terms of technology solutions and have a vision for the city's future development direction.

Mr. Hieu said: “I worked hard with my colleagues, from installing sensors to integrate into the IOT system, planting poles to install cameras, aligning and building the system... to exchanging and presenting technology and products to customers. The cost in Dubai is quite high, we have to try even harder to complete the established work plan and arising requirements.”

According to Mr. Hieu, during the construction process, we constantly update the actual situation because "we must understand the field so that the product can be good and fully utilize its features".

For example, when designing, he had to train the AI to recognize the Arabic numeral system and many colors on license plates. When installing, he had to fine-tune the camera installation angle to be most accurate, operating in the harsh climate and weather environment here.

Talking about the pressures when implementing projects and technology products related to the field he is in charge of, IT engineer Hoang Khac Hieu said that the greater the pressure, the higher the resilience and he has been used to the intensity and high requirements since the early days of working with Viettel.

Mr. Hieu said that in 2019, he officially joined Viettel and was assigned to the new product development department. The new product development department has a small number of staff but serves "hot" and large-scale projects, requiring each employee to have a solid technical foundation, discipline, withstand pressure and always be ready to join.

When he first started working, the fresh graduate had his first business trip to Ninh Thuan - where a traffic fine monitoring project was being developed.

He directly discussed, analyzed and advised customers on technological solutions such as centralized AI, border AI... in building a traffic monitoring system; then implemented it at 3 traffic monitoring and penalty nodes in Phan Rang - Thap Cham city (Ninh Thuan). He also directly taught classes on how to use the system for the city's police force.

“This is the first time I have presented, instructed on how to operate the system and answered questions and concerns in front of a large audience, mainly traffic police. Although I was a bit nervous, the content had been carefully prepared, so the first class was quite successful,” said Mr. Hieu.

Since that first business trip and class, Mr. Hoang Khac Hieu has had many more business trips to introduce products, carry out projects and take care of domestic and foreign customers.

Including the deployment and development of the "Green Channel" project during the COVID pandemic to ensure smooth traffic nationwide; 'Smart Traffic Penalty Monitoring Project in the Smart City ecosystem, deployed for more than 30 projects across Vietnam and internationally; IOT Platform, ITS (Smart Traffic), Digital Office, Trafficid products in the ITS ecosystem deployed in Peru...

Mr. Hoang Khac Hieu is currently the "captain" of Development Department 2 (Government Solution Center) with nearly 30 Gen Z employees.

“I am the oldest in the room, the youngest was born in 2003. Facing a team of young people who love research, are full of aspirations to assert themselves and contribute, if we do not constantly learn to improve our expertise, capacity and courage, it will be difficult to create trust and prestige for everyone to agree and accompany us,” said Mr. Hieu.

During his work, Mr. Hieu always sets the requirement to improve and enhance the quality of products and constantly learn, including learning from competitors. He always asks why the differences come from competitors' technologies and solutions, as well as how those different features affect.

Mr. Hieu said that new and advanced technologies such as AI, big data systems, etc. will change the behavior and interaction of users. This is a problem for everyone working in the technology field to research, find solutions, and motivate creativity.

Besides presiding over the implementation and development of important projects that bring in large revenues, Mr. Hieu is the author of many effective ideas and initiatives at the unit, including 3 Corporation-level initiatives that have been applied in practice.

Specifically, the initiative "Applying the open source platform Jhipster to standardize and automate the development, deployment, and application of CI/CD, cloud-native for applications at VTS"; the initiative "Applying NO-CODE trending with Apache-Nifi and Tableau technology stack for IOC application development"; the solution "Building a Base template framework to improve construction speed, feature standards, and UI&UX quality for TT GPCP products".

According to Mr. Hieu, innovation and creativity not only promote work development but are also extremely important personal requirements for each person to escape the risk of "saturation", have more motivation and opportunities for self-development.

With achievements in labor production, Hoang Khac Hieu won the title of Emulation Fighter of the whole army in 2024; four consecutive years as Emulation Fighter of the base (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024); received the DX Excellence Scholarship of Viettel Group for talented personnel in 2023.

Mr. Hieu is one of the 10 outstanding young faces of the entire army in 2024; nominated for the Outstanding Young Vietnamese Faces Award in 2024 in the field of labor production.

Hoang Khac Hieu fell in love with information technology early on. A family member brought a Windows 95 computer to his village and it attracted him to information technology.

Simple operations to quickly handle difficult problems full of data or text pages... on the computer made him more passionate about learning computer techniques and trying his hand at programming. First prize in the provincial competition for excellent students in Information Technology in grade 9, passing the specialized Information Technology class at Quang Binh High School for the Gifted helped him become a student at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Working at Viettel was one of his goals since his early years as a technology student, so he signed up for the internship program here. After graduating from university, the IT engineer joined Viettel.
