Thai Binh province has favorable natural conditions and the strength of many rivers flowing through it; in recent years, many households in the localities have developed fish cage farming on the river, becoming an effective direction in aquaculture.
Quang Trung Commune (Hung Ha District) borders the Luoc River, which is very suitable for developing aquaculture, including fish cage farming on the river. Up to now, the commune has developed 100 fish cages.
Following the dike, we visited Mr. Nguyen Van Dinh's fish cage farming model; the first impression was that the fish farming area was invested in on a large scale, the fish cage system was firmly tied, neatly planned, ensuring safe waterway traffic.
Starting fish farming in cages in 2014, with 15 fish cages, Mr. Nguyen Van Dinh has now developed 30 fish cages.
Mr. Pham Xuan Thuy, Vu Doai commune (Vu Thu district, Thai Binh province) invested in 40 fish cages on the Red River.
Mr. Dinh said: Cage fish farming is very suitable for aquatic species such as catfish, common carp, grass carp, and gold carp.
Each fish cage on the river has different sizes, the smallest has a volume of 54m3 , the largest is 72m3 . In a 1 sao pond, about 700kg to 1 ton of fish can be harvested, like this model, the profit can be 5 times higher than in a pond. In 2024, my profit per fish cage will reach 20 million VND.
In Quang Trung commune, Mr. Nguyen Dai Duong shared that fish raised in rivers always have better meat and do not have the fishy taste like fish raised in ponds and lakes because the water source is always circulated.
Cage fish farming usually has products for sale year round, but Lunar New Year is considered the main harvest season.
To raise fish in cages on the river effectively, we must carefully study the location of the cages, select fish breeds, manage and care for them. During the farming process, the cages must be cleaned once a week, floating trash and hard objects stuck to the cage cluster, and leftover food in the cages must be removed.
In addition, it is necessary to thoroughly apply disease prevention measures for fish, use underwater density meters to check and care for fish according to the correct process. Currently, I have developed 30 cages for raising catfish and crispy carp. During the Lunar New Year, I sold 30 tons of commercial fish. Total revenue in 2024 from cage fish farming will reach over 4 billion VND.
Taking advantage of the Red River flowing through the area, Mr. Pham Xuan Thuy, Vu Doai commune (Vu Thu district, Thai Binh province) has invested in 40 fish cages.
He said: After Tet, I released 200,000 fish fry. Each fish cage can be sold for 5 tons at a price of more than 80,000 VND/kg. The important thing about raising fish in cages on the river is to have a firm grasp of fish care techniques, disease prevention and control, and good application of natural disaster prevention and control measures.
The cage fish farming model on Luoc River of Mr. Nguyen Dai Duong, Quang Trung commune (Hung Ha district, Thai Binh province) brings high economic efficiency.
Currently, the province has 725 fish cages on the river with a total volume of more than 78,644m3 owned by 53 households. The strongest development of fish cage farming on the river is in Hung Ha district with 275 cages, Quynh Phu district with 213 cages, Vu Thu district with 121 cages...
Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet, Deputy Head of the Department of Fisheries, said: To encourage households to develop cage fish farming, the Department of Fisheries has coordinated with districts to direct localities to guide and create conditions for people to raise cage fish according to planning and have appropriate mechanisms to encourage and motivate people to expand cage fish farming.
The functional sector strengthens training for households on the process of raising fish in cages on rivers according to VietGAP. Replicates aquaculture extension models with high-quality aquatic breeds.
Assign technical staff to directly supervise and provide guidance on farming techniques; disease prevention and treatment methods for aquatic products; monitor the growth and development of aquatic products to evaluate effectiveness each year.
The Department of Fisheries of Thai Binh province also promotes the farming of aquatic species with high economic value and specialties such as catfish, crispy carp, and black carp.
The unit also encourages chain production linkages between businesses and farmers or the formation of cooperatives and cooperative groups to facilitate investment resources to develop concentrated cage fish farming, increasing product value linked to the consumption market.
