The two relics of the Nguyen Dynasty, the Temple of Literature and the Imperial Academy, have been approved by Hue City for investment in conservation and restoration with a budget of more than 240 billion VND. This is an effort to preserve and promote the cultural heritage, which used to be a unique examination space of the ancient capital.

Preserve and promote unique cultural, historical and architectural values

In early February 2025, the Hue City Museum of History completed the handover of the Imperial Academy - which was the headquarters of the Museum for more than 40 years (at No. 1, 23/8 Street, Dong Ba Ward, Phu Xuan District) to the Hue Monuments Conservation Center. From now on, the Center will manage and implement a comprehensive restoration and conservation plan to promote the value of the monument.

Previously, at the end of 2024, the People's Council of Thua Thien Hue province (now Hue city) passed a Resolution adjusting the investment policy of the project "Preservation and adaptation of the Imperial Academy - Hue Citadel" with a budget of more than 108 billion VND from the local budget.

The project was carried out over 4 years, focusing on renovating Di Luan Duong - the main structure of the Imperial Academy, along with other items such as the three-entrance gate, the left and right Learning houses, the left and right houses of the Students, the left and right Kieu family houses, the kitchen and the house covering the Huynh Tu Thu Thanh Stele.

At the same time, the project also includes renovation of items such as repairing and upgrading the security guard house, building a parking lot, renovating the yard, road, landscape and equipping technical infrastructure, fire prevention and fighting (PCCC) systems...

Over the years, the structures of the Nguyen Dynasty's Imperial Academy have seriously degraded, especially Di Luan Duong with its traditional wooden architecture.

According to the quality inspection results of the Department of Construction, some structural components of the project do not meet the requirements for normal use, and are in a state of local danger. Therefore, the project needs to be dismantled for repair, reinforcement and upgrading to ensure load-bearing safety and meet the requirements for long-term use.

According to the leaders of Hue City People's Committee, the preservation and restoration of Quoc Tu Giam is extremely necessary to stop the degradation of the UNESCO-recognized world heritage site, and at the same time make an important contribution to perfecting the overall architecture of the Hue Monuments Complex.

The locality's goal is that after restoration, the Imperial Academy will become the Museum of Education and Examinations, in order to preserve and promote its unique cultural and historical values. At the same time, connecting this area with the Hue Royal Fine Arts Museum (located north of the Imperial Academy) will create a cluster of relics with special and distinct values. Thereby, the heritage value will be preserved and promoted, contributing to promoting the economic, cultural and social development of the city.

Mr. Hoang Viet Trung, Director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, said: The Center is carrying out procedures and documents to implement the project to preserve and restore the Imperial Academy according to regulations. The project is expected to be implemented in 2025. Along with the Imperial Academy, the Center is also carrying out procedures to restore and restore the Temple of Literature.

Restoration, embellishment and adaptive restoration of the Temple of Literature

At the end of 2024, the People's Council of Thua Thien Hue province approved the adjustment of the investment policy for the project "Renovation, embellishment and adaptive restoration of the Temple of Literature (phase 1)". The project has a total cost of more than 132.1 billion VND and will be implemented in 3 years.

The Temple of Literature was built over 200 years ago, currently located in Long Ho Ward, Phu Xuan District, and is a typical structure in the Complex of Hue Ancient Capital Architecture. This is the place to worship the Saints, Confucian scholars and talented people of the country. However, for many reasons, this relic is currently seriously degraded, especially the wooden structures, of which the main temple only has the foundation left.

According to the approved policy, the project will restore the entire main hall of the Temple of Literature (area of 830m²), renovate the temple yard of 950m², gates such as Dai Thanh Mon, Kim Thanh Mon, Ngoc Chan Mon; restore the Temple of Literature Gate (area of 92m²); at the same time restore the boat dock, embellish trees, improve the landscape and technical infrastructure...

The investment in the restoration and renovation of the Temple of Literature is not only to commemorate the famous people who contributed to the country's development under the Nguyen Dynasty, but also to honor and encourage the studious spirit of the Vietnamese people in general and the people of Hue in particular. After successful restoration, this relic will contribute to enriching the architectural heritage value of the ancient capital of Hue and the relic cluster from the Kim Long - Thien Mu Pagoda - Temple of Literature area.

Quoc Tu Giam, originally named Doc Hoc Duong, is located along the Huong River, about 5 km from the Citadel. The building was built in 1803 under King Gia Long. In 1820, King Minh Mang changed its name to Quoc Tu Giam, becoming the first university built under the Nguyen Dynasty in Hue.

The Imperial Academy was expanded and renovated many times under the reigns of Minh Mang, Thieu Tri and Tu Duc. In 1908, the relic was moved to its current location, southeast of the Imperial Citadel. The Imperial Academy of the Nguyen Dynasty has profound cultural and historical values and unique architectural art. In 1993, this relic and the Nguyen Dynasty relic system in Hue were recognized by UNESCO as a tangible cultural heritage.
