As dawn breaks, boats laden with herring line up to come ashore to unload their catch, ready to sell to traders, locals, and even tourists right on the long sandy beaches.
Every morning, along the coast of Hoang Thanh and Hoang Truong communes in Hoang Hoa district, Thanh Hoa province, many small boats and rafts dock. These boats are laden with nets full of herring, which they bring ashore.
Local fishermen say that herring live 5 to 10 nautical miles from the shore, usually swimming near the surface. Depending on the weather, fishermen will go out to sea between 3 and 4 a.m. and return around 8 a.m. the same day.
When the boat docks, the boat owner will mobilize family members, dividing them into groups of 4 to 6 people, to collect the fish.
When the boats return, traders from various places gather on the shore to wait to buy the herring. After visually inspecting them, they select the best fish to buy and then resell them retail.
Besides selling to traders who buy in large quantities, if individual customers have a need, boat owners sell herring on the spot by weight.
According to the fishermen, herring is in season right now, so it's very delicious and sells at a good price. After deducting fuel costs, labor expenses, and breakfast costs, each boat owner earns a profit of several hundred thousand to several million dong, depending on whether they catch a lot or a little fish on a particular day.
Mr. Nguyen Van Ha from Hoang Thanh commune, Hoang Hoa district, Thanh Hoa province, said that herring usually move in schools close to the shore to feed in the early morning, so if fishermen catch them in the right schools, they will have a bountiful catch. However, catching herring also depends heavily on the tides, weather, and the experience of the fishermen.
Herring fishing doesn't require a lot of investment; as long as the fishermen are experienced, the yield can be substantial.
Although herring does not have the same economic value as tuna, mackerel, or squid, its advantage is that it only requires small boats and can be caught near the shore. Especially for fishermen who lack the capital for offshore fishing trips, herring provides a stable source of income for their families.
Besides herring, this season, fishermen in Hoang Thanh and Hoang Truong communes, Hoang Hoa district, Thanh Hoa province, are also having a bumper catch of krill (moi).
Shrimp also brings significant income to fishermen in Hoang Thanh and Hoang Truong communes, Hoang Hoa district, Thanh Hoa province.
