On February 21, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tiep, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Canh Duong Commune, Quang Trach District, said that some fishermen in the area had just hit the jackpot with anchovies, earning about 150 million VND.

The fishing boat of fisherman Tran Dinh Cuong (Yen Hai village, Canh Duong commune) and 4 other fishermen were fishing in the coastal waters and were lucky to have a big catch of white anchovies.

After a night of fishing, Mr. Cuong’s boat docked, carrying 6 tons of white anchovies. With a selling price of about 25,000 VND/kg, Mr. Cuong’s boat earned about 150 million VND.

According to Mr. Cuong, this is the fourth fishing trip in the first days of the new year of Giap Thin 2024. During these four fishing trips, he and his crew caught more than 12 tons of various types of seafood, earning a revenue of more than 300 million VND.

Although they have not yet gone far out to sea, in the first days of the new year, the fishing trips of Canh Duong commune have brought back many kinds of seafood, such as mackerel, squid, crab and especially white anchovies.

Previously on February 19, fisherman Phan Minh Phuong (Bau Bang village, Duc Trach commune, Bo Trach district) also had a big catch of nearly 100 yellow catfish. Each fish weighed from 2.5 to more than 3 kg, total weight about 300 kg.

As soon as he brought the boat to the beach, many people and traders came to share the joy and buy the above fish at 100,000 VND/kg. Thus, with this first spring fishing trip, Mr. Phuong has an income of 30 million VND.

Excited to "go to the beach" at the beginning of the year

Taking advantage of favorable weather, in the coastal communes of Quang Trach district, dozens of small-capacity fishing boats of fishermen have crowded to the shore after the first "open sea" trips of the year to catch seafood, bringing back fresh food to supply the market.

This season, fishermen mainly fish close to shore with many types of fish such as herring, anchovy, mantis shrimp, blue crab, squid, etc. In particular, herring and anchovy often go in large groups, so when casting their nets, many fishermen catch a big catch, bringing in high income.

According to fishermen, small boats should only fish about 5-7 nautical miles from shore, fuel costs are about 200,000-300,000 VND. Seafood prices are always high in the first days of the new year, so fishermen are all excited. After "going to sea", many fishermen earn big profits.

For fishermen, the first sea trip of the year is extremely important, containing many wishes and aspirations for a year of good luck, favorable weather, and a full hold of fish and shrimp.

On this occasion, many large-capacity ships and boats of Quang Binh fishermen specializing in offshore fishing grounds in Hoang Sa, Truong Sa, etc. are also busy repairing ships, fishing gear, and preparing logistics to go to sea, bringing with them the expectation of bountiful fishing trips.

Quang Binh province currently has 6,792 fishing boats in the sea, rivers and lakes. Of these, there are more than 3,600 fishing boats at sea, 2,400 small capacity boats from 6-15m; the remaining are from 15m and above.
