Ms. Nguyen Thi May, Head of the English Department, Lomonosov Secondary and High School, Hanoi, assessed that the 2024 English high school graduation exam has a structure relatively similar to the sample exam announced by the Ministry of Education and Training in March 2024, including 50 multiple-choice questions, testing a synthesis of knowledge of phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension and writing mainly in the textbook program studied.

Difficult questions with high application requirements include questions 3, 15, 30 and the refer/not true reading passage questions such as 42, 46, accounting for about 10%, while understanding and recognition account for about 60%.
The knowledge appearing in the exam covers almost all the grammar structures that students have learned in high school.
The application and high application level questions aimed at classifying students are in the vocabulary, phrasal verbs, idioms and inference questions in the 7-sentence reading passage.
The reading comprehension is not too difficult. First, the questions follow the sample questions of the set: Both passages have questions about the main idea of the passage, about the details in the passage, finding synonyms, finding the FALSE sentence (NOT TRUE or EXCEPT). Question 42 (inference) is always the most "brain-damaging" question for students.
Second, the vocabulary is on topics that are quite familiar to students: Pollution, technology, generation. So it is not too difficult for students to understand the detailed content of the whole lesson. One belief is that if they have good reading and comprehension skills, they will easily do the two reading comprehension exercises above.
"This year's exam has a clearer differentiation than last year's official exam. The score range will be around 6.5-7.5 points, average students will get around 5-6 points, good students will get around 7-8 points, and truly excellent students will get 9-10 points," said Ms. Nguyen Thi May.

According to experts from the Hoc Mai system, the 2024 high school graduation English exam basically follows the structure of the reference exam that the Ministry of Education and Training announced in March 2024, similar to the 2023 high school graduation exam; the exam still has questions to classify candidates and is suitable for the requirements for university admission purposes.
Regarding structure and scope of knowledge: The exam tests knowledge of phonetics, grammar, vocabulary, communication functions, writing skills, reading skills - these are all familiar types of questions to candidates during the review process.
The scope of knowledge asked is mainly within the 12th grade English program and is familiar to candidates.
Regarding the difficulty of the exam: About 75% of the questions are at the level of recognition and understanding, and the rest are application and high-level application questions. The differentiation of the exam still focuses on vocabulary and reading comprehension questions.

+ Level 7+ questions such as: pronunciation, stress, comparative grammar questions, tag questions, articles, word types, reduced adverbial clauses, prepositions, pronouns, verb tenses, adverbial clauses of time, conjunctions, gerunds and infinitives, conversational sentences, synonyms-antonyms, synonyms, sentence connectors, phrasal verbs, collocations, pronoun questions and detailed information in reading comprehension, confusing words.
+ Level 8+ questions such as: words with the same semantic field, vocabulary in the reading passage, find synonyms in the reading passage
+ Level 9+ questions such as: advanced vocabulary, idioms, main idea/best title questions, inference questions in reading comprehension because these are questions that require candidates to have a rich vocabulary and understand many layers of word meaning and high-level inference from information in the reading.
For example: idiom question question 6 code 408; advanced vocabulary question question 8 code 408. Main idea/best title question like question 36 code 408; inference question in reading comprehension like question 41, 42 code 408.
However, these questions are not too difficult, candidates can rely on the information in the reading passage and use the elimination method to choose the most likely correct option.
Experts from this system estimate that the average score for English this year will likely be around 5.5-6.5; the number of 9+ scores will be high and concentrated in the group of students in group D or those who choose English as a subject for university entrance exams.
