In the match of the 16th round of the 2023 Asian Cup taking place on the evening of January 30, the Uzbekistan team (ranked 68th in the world) proved why they are rated higher than the Thai team (ranked 113th in FIFA). The team from the Central Asian region entered the match proactively, pushing up their squad to attack right after the opening whistle. However, the Thai defense system played with concentration, not allowing the opponent's agile and technical attackers to penetrate.
After about 10 minutes of very fast play, Uzbekistan could not maintain the attacking tempo. However, the Central Asian representative with superior human quality still created suffocating pressure on the "war elephant" goal.
Turgunboev opened the scoring for Uzbekistan
Facing the opponent's strong attack, the Thai team's defense began to show mistakes. Against Uzbekistan's sharp central attacks, with the ability to circulate the ball quickly and accurately, the team from the land of the golden pagoda could only stand firm until the 37th minute.
The position that received the most trust from Thai fans was Theerathon Bunmathan, who made a mistake, causing the team led by coach Ishii to concede a goal. From a precise cross from his teammate, Turgunboev perfectly stopped the ball to get past Theerathon Bunmathan, before finishing delicately to open the score for Uzbekistan.
Supachok scores a super curling goal for Thailand
In the second half, the Thai team was forced to look for a goal, so they boldly raised their formation to attack. In which, the changes of coach Masatada Ishii brought about an effect. After entering the field, Supachok knew how to speak up with a move that was full of his own mark. In the 58th minute, after a pass-and-go with Supachai, Supachok launched a beautiful curling shot from outside the penalty area, sending the ball with an extremely difficult trajectory to the far corner to equalize the score to 1-1.
Not letting their opponents rejoice for long, Uzbekistan quickly regained their composure and once again took the lead. In the 65th minute, Fayzullaev turned the ball around in the penalty area and shot diagonally to raise the score to 2-1 for the Central Asian team. This was also the final score of the match.
The Thai team officially ended its journey at the 2023 Asian Cup. The ticket to the quarterfinals belongs to the Uzbekistan team.
