Coach Kim Sang-sik only called up two new players to the Vietnam national team in the March 2025 training session. One of them is Pham Ly Duc, an interesting name that could attract the attention of sports fans in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Pham Ly Duc revealed that his name was named after a famous Vietnamese bodybuilder of that time. Bodybuilder Ly Duc was once one of the leading names in Vietnamese sports, winning 5 Asian gold medals and 1 ASIAD gold medal from 1997 to 2002.

"My father loved weight training since he was young. He named me after his idol, the famous weightlifter Ly Duc," said the new recruit of the Vietnamese team.

Not only was Pham Ly Duc named after a famous athlete, he also followed his father's habit of exercising. The 22-year-old player said he likes to go to the gym in his free time.

"My father is also my teacher. At home, he trained me very strictly, taught me how to control my diet, not to drink carbonated or alcoholic drinks. I also learned from my father to go to the gym. This is good for the body," Pham Ly Duc shared. Interestingly, when he first started learning to play football, Pham Ly Duc was considered... small. After a few years, this player "grew up", developed his body and reached a height of over 1m80 as he is now.

The player born in 2002 was initially trained at the PVF Football Center (at that time still based in Ho Chi Minh City). After being eliminated, at the suggestion of coach Tran Minh Chien, his parents decided to send Pham Ly Duc to enroll in the HAGL Nutifood Academy in Dong Thap.

Pham Ly Duc started all 16 rounds since the beginning of the season for HAGL.

In 2023, Pham Ly Duc started playing professionally for Ba Ria-Vung Tau club in the First Division. He was a starter for two consecutive seasons before returning to Hoang Anh Gia Lai and making his V.League debut. Since the beginning of the 2024-2025 season, Pham Ly Duc has played 16 matches and has never been substituted.

The new recruit of the Vietnamese team revealed that his idol is Sergio Ramos - a central defender famous for his strong playing style. In addition, this player also admires seniors such as Que Ngoc Hai, Do Duy Manh, Bui Tien Dung, Nguyen Thanh Chung.

"I accumulate little by little to improve myself. Professional players are only 10% talent. The remaining 90% comes from training. Only by practicing diligently can we bring ourselves closer to success," Pham Ly Duc shared.

This player has been called up to the youth teams several times but has never played in an official tournament. Therefore, he is still a name that is not noticed and is a surprise in the list of the Vietnamese team in this training session. However, to have the opportunity to play, Pham Ly Duc must overcome a very difficult challenge when competing with seniors who have superior skills and good form.

"I don't believe I can be called up to the Vietnam national team. I am grateful to HAGL and the team's coaches for giving me the opportunity to compete in the V-League to prove my ability. I am only at the beginning of my career. I always want to keep myself humble, try hard in training, competing and improving myself little by little every day, " said the new recruit of the Vietnam national team.
