Reducing the amount of rice seeds sown from 90 kg/ha to 60 kg/ha, reducing fertilizer application from 6 times to 3 times, reducing the number of spraying times from 10 times to 5 times, Mr. Tran Vu Chi (in Dong Thap province) still achieved a profit of 33.9 million VND/ha. Meanwhile, the rice fields of surrounding households only achieved 23.1 million VND/ha.
Reducing production costs, rice farmers maximize profits
Recently, in Tan Cong Sinh commune, Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province, two member units of PAN Group, including Vietnam Seed Group Joint Stock Company (Vinaseed) and Vietnam Fumigation Joint Stock Company (VFC), coordinated with Binh Dien II Fertilizer Production and Trading Joint Stock Company - 2 Phong to organize a conference "Summary of demonstration models of high-quality, low-emission rice cultivation solutions associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta region".
According to information from the conference, the highlight of the demonstration models implemented in the past time was to help farmers reduce production costs to 16.8 million VND/ha, 26.3% lower than the control field (the control field cost 22.7 million VND/ha), thereby helping to increase profits to about 33.9 million VND/ha, 46.5% higher than the control (23.1 million VND/ha).
The profit/revenue ratio of the model reached 67%, higher than the 50% of the control field.

With the goal of reducing emissions and increasing income for rice cultivation, since the end of 2023, PAN Group has initiated a 3-party linkage project in 6 provinces in the Southwest region between Vinaseed, Vietnam Fumigation Joint Stock Company (VFC), Binh Dien II Fertilizer Production and Trading Joint Stock Company (2 Phong). In which, Vinaseed is responsible for providing quality rice seed solutions, perfecting the cultivation process, chairing and directly implementing.
To date, the model has implemented 3 rice crops (winter-spring 2023-2024, summer-autumn 2024, winter-spring 2024-2025) with a total area of 85.3 hectares in 6 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region, including Dong Thap, An Giang, Long An, Soc Trang, Can Tho City and Kien Giang.
The production process is based on the technical process of the Department of Crop Production. In which, the model uses rice seeds from Vinaseed, fertilizers from Binh Dien II and pest control processes from VFC.
To reduce production costs to 16.8 million VND/ha, farmers reduced the amount of rice seeds sown from 90kg/ha to 60kg/ha, reduced fertilizer application from 6 times to 3 times; reduced pesticide spraying from 10 times to 5 times. This helped reduce seed costs by 36.2%, fertilizer by 26%, and pesticides by 36%.
Despite reducing all input factors, the fields still grew very well. Accordingly, the yield reached 7.05 tons of dry rice/ha, 10.6% higher than the control field (6.37 tons of dry rice/ha). All rice in the model fields was purchased by Vinaseed for export, helping farmers earn a profit of 33.9 million VND/ha.

Mr. Tran Vu Chi - a farmer participating in the model said that he has 3 hectares of land to produce Dai Thom 8 rice variety. After 3 months of cultivation following the instructions of 3 parties: Vinaseed, VFC and 2 Phong (applying the method of alternating flooding and drying irrigation), he found it very effective, due to a significant reduction in input costs and increased profits at harvest (33.9 million VND/ha).
According to Mr. Chi, the model also helps create products that meet export standards and reduce pesticide residues. Currently, in the fields, the weather changes erratically, and the export market has increasingly strict quality requirements, so growing rice in the above way is very necessary and easy to replicate in the future.
Implementing the target of reducing emissions in rice production
Mr. Duong Quang Sau - Deputy General Director of Vinaseed said that through 3 pilot rice crops in the Mekong Delta provinces, the models have proven to be very effective: "The model not only reduces production costs and increases farmers' income, but also contributes to the goal of reducing emissions in the agricultural sector through a complete solution package to reduce seeds - fertilizers, pesticides and the method of alternating wet and dry irrigation, reducing water use".
Like Mr. Sau, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tra My - General Director of PAN Group informed that the members of the group and its partner Binh Dien II - 2 Phong have built a closed value chain model with very sustainable agricultural solutions. The solutions have reduced input costs and increased productivity and maximum quality, thereby achieving two important goals: reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector and increasing income for people.
"Farmers must benefit for sustainable development to be effective. In the coming time, we believe that this chain linkage model can be replicated in many localities across the country," said Ms. Tra My.
Mr. Tran Thanh Tam - Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Dong Thap province highly appreciated the model when there was cooperation between 3 parties: Vinaseed, Binh Dien II - 2 Phong and VFC, because the cultivation process had a role of strict control at all stages.
According to Mr. Tam, towards the project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta, Dong Thap aims to reach a production area of 50,000 hectares. Therefore, the model with cooperation between the above 3 parties will greatly help the locality to soon complete the set goal.
