Increase purchasing power for OCOP products on supermarket shelves

Recently, many supermarkets and shopping malls in Dong Nai such as Co.opmart Bien Hoa, BigC Dong Nai, GO! Tan Hiep, Lotte Mart Dong Nai, MM Mega Market Bien Hoa... have arranged booths dedicated to specialties of localities across the country, including OCOP products (One Commune One Product Program) of Dong Nai.

In fact, although many OCOP products have been on the shelves, in general, purchasing power and revenue are still modest. The main purpose of OCOP products on supermarket shelves is still to promote and introduce the products.

Lack of channels to stimulate consumption

On many shelves of OCOP products and local specialties in supermarkets, local OCOP products, although displayed in quite nice locations, near the entrance, are mostly for promotion and introduction, while purchasing power is still not as expected.

Explaining this issue, representatives of many supermarkets in the province said that although many OCOP products have been supported to be put on shelves dedicated to OCOP products, most of them still focus on promoting and introducing the products. Many OCOP entities lack resources and capital to maintain a stable supply of goods to supermarkets.

Mr. Trang Phuc, representative of the Marketing Department of Co.opmart Bien Hoa, said that the supermarket is still maintaining shelves of Dong Nai OCOP products, focusing on dried foods, packaged processed foods, etc. This shelf currently has about 10 local products.

These products increasingly focus on quality, packaging, and design. However, many OCOP products have not yet maintained a stable supply to supermarkets, nor have they hit the consumer psychology, lacking attractive promotional activities, especially during peak shopping seasons.

Similarly, according to Director of MM Mega Market Bien Hoa Nguyen Ky Hiep, the supermarket has deployed an OCOP product booth. This booth is located in an easy-to-see area in the supermarket and is increasingly attracting the attention of consumers, choosing to buy OCOP products, regional specialties... However, to improve the efficiency and revenue of this booth, businesses and OCOP entities need to pay more attention to promotional programs and consumer stimulus programs for customers...

According to the Department of Industry and Trade, in the coming time, the department will coordinate with relevant departments, branches and localities in the province to promote and strengthen the development of the domestic market, stimulate consumption in the province, and actively respond to the Campaign "Vietnamese people prioritize using Vietnamese goods". At the same time, promote trade promotion, connect supply and demand for key products, OCOP products, typical rural industrial products; as well as support the provision of market information to local businesses.

At the same time, the department will strengthen the connection and linkage of goods circulation and businesses trading on the provincial e-commerce platform with e-commerce platforms of provinces and cities nationwide.

Strengthening connections, boosting trade promotion activities

According to many experts, connecting local products to modern retail channels to achieve efficiency requires synchronization from both manufacturing and supplying enterprises and retail units with support and connection from relevant departments and branches.

Representative of Vang Anh Honey Facility (in An Vien Commune, Trang Bom District) Vu Thi Thanh Thuy said that the facility wishes to have more capital support programs to develop, expand production, connect raw material sources, promote e-commerce, trade promotion... In particular, aiming to develop supply channels for supermarket systems inside and outside the province with the facility's main product lines such as: royal jelly, pollen, ginger honey, dehydrated honey, raw honey...

Mr. Trang Phuc added that in order to increase competitiveness on supermarket shelves, first of all, OCOP products need to ensure quality, standards, and origin according to the requirements and criteria of supermarkets. Moreover, OCOP entities need to pay more attention to marketing, promotion, after-sales service, etc. so that consumers know and use the products more, thereby increasing attractiveness and competitiveness on shelves.

At the same time, localities, supply chains, supermarkets, businesses and OCOP entities need to have more connections and expand trading activities, thereby creating opportunities for distributors and retailers to access local specialty products with great potential...

At the Conference on Deploying the Tasks of the Industry and Trade Sector in 2025, Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Duong Minh Dung emphasized 7 key tasks for the industry and trade sector of the province in 2025. In particular, it is noted that Dong Nai's industry and trade sector needs to continue to improve the effectiveness of trade promotion activities and trade connections so that OCOP products, Dong Nai's strong products have the opportunity to reach out, expand the market, connect with domestic and export markets, as well as connect to modern retail chains and systems, e-commerce channels, etc.
