Speaking to reporters, Quang Thanh Truong (Thai ethnic group, 38 years old) said that in the past, his family grew rice on an area of 6,000 square meters. However, due to lack of water, they could only grow one rice crop per year, just enough to eat, with no surplus.
Mr. Quang Thanh Truong picks mulberries to feed his family's silkworms.
"After seeing many people in the village growing mulberry and raising silkworms with high economic efficiency, I followed suit, using 6,000m2 of my family's rice fields to grow mulberry and learn silkworm raising. Each batch of silkworms is raised for 15-17 days and will yield cocoons. Each month I collect 100kg of cocoons, the price of cocoons is about 200,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses I have an income of about 15 million VND, many times higher than growing rice before.
Thanks to growing mulberry and raising silkworms, my family has money to send our children to school, build a solid house, and develop the economy. This job is also easy but requires constant work, and it is a bit harder during the rainy season. However, compared to growing rice, my family's income is many times higher," Mr. Truong shared.
