During a business trip to Thuan Chau district (Son La province), we were introduced to the wild orchid growing model of Mr. Tong Van Din in Na Cai village, Chieng Ly commune. With thousands of wild orchid pots of all kinds, Mr. Din is considered the "nanny" of wild orchids in this land.
During a business trip to Thuan Chau district (Son La province), we were introduced to the wild orchid growing model of Mr. Tong Van Din in Na Cai village, Chieng Ly commune. With thousands of baskets of wild orchids of all kinds, Mr. Din is considered the "nanny" of wild orchids in this land.
Having made an appointment, when we arrived, Mr. Tong Van Din immediately led us to the orchid garden next to his house, then enthusiastically introduced each type of rare wild orchid present in the garden.
Through our open conversation with him, we gradually understood the fate that brought him to the profession of growing wild orchids.
Having loved nature and been passionate about wild orchids since childhood, after graduating from university in 2009, Din returned to his hometown, determined to start a career growing wild orchids.
Passionate about wild orchids - noble flowers - but just started growing orchids, not much experience in caring for wild orchids, so success in growing orchids has not come yet.
Initially failing in the field of growing wild orchids, he still diligently studied, spent time and effort learning from the experiences of those who went before him.
Mr. Tong Van Din in Na Cai village, Chieng Ly commune, Thuan Chau district (Son La province) learned orchid growing techniques, experience in growing wild orchids, caring for and propagating each type of orchid...
Walking among the orchid trellises competing to show off their colors, Mr. Din generously said: To have beautiful flower baskets that grow well, I calculated the design of an airy garden, the flower trellises are 1.5 m high or higher, the top is covered with a net that provides 50% sun protection, the garden is divided into many levels.
The upper floor holds mature, domesticated baskets that require little care. The lower floor holds undomesticated orchid baskets that require a lot of care.
All types of orchids need a lot of wind, to have a beautiful orchid basket, it must have a roof, a ventilated trellis, and be clean. My family currently has 3 orchid gardens with a total area of over 2,000 m².
Mr. Tong Van Din, a grower of wild orchids - a noble flower in Na Cai village, Chieng Ly commune, Thuan Chau district (Son La province) takes care of his family's orchid garden.
Through skillful hands and meticulous care, Mr. Din's orchid garden has more than 4,000 baskets of 40 types, assembled in many different styles.
Each basket of wild orchids here costs from several hundred thousand to several tens of millions of dong, with some baskets worth hundreds of millions of dong. Growing orchids not only helps him satisfy his passion but also brings in income, his family earns about 300 to 400 million dong each year.
Many customers not only come to him to buy and enjoy orchids, but also to learn about his experience and how to grow and care for orchids.
Failure comes from orchids, success also comes from orchids, so Mr. Din understands all the characteristics of each type of orchid in the garden; he uses all kinds of longan tree trunks, driftwood, coconut fiber... to grow orchids, each type of orchid is suitable for a different type of substrate and wood.
Wild orchids only bloom once a year, and their growth characteristics are very unique, so the selection of varieties and care are very important. Moreover, many orchid baskets are highly priced not only because of their rarity, but also because of the way the growers graft and design the orchid baskets to create beautiful and meaningful shapes.
Besides the factors of seedlings and artistic shaping, care, especially fertilizer, is extremely important for the growth and development of orchids.
After many experiments, Mr. Din has succeeded in using goat manure to fertilize wild orchids. Currently, in addition to composting goat manure to grow orchids at home, Mr. Din also buys goat manure to compost, pack it into bags and sell to orchid growers across the country.
We asked to visit the breeding area, and Mr. Din immediately agreed. Next to the orchid branches full of young buds, he shared: This is the process of breeding, if the old branches are thrown away, it would be a waste, so I focus on breeding them.
Now that there are very few orchids left in nature, breeding will help orchid species not become extinct and players can still have their favorite orchids to grow, care for and enjoy.
Growing orchids not only satisfies his passion, but also creates jobs for some new graduates to take care of orchid gardens, to earn extra income.
Mr. Tong Van Din's wild orchid growing model is one of the typical economic models in Chieng Ly commune.
Over the years, the commune has also created conditions for Mr. Din's family to borrow bank loans to invest in growing orchids, creating conditions for him to participate in training courses on flower growing techniques and experience in promotion and introduction to create output for his orchid products.
