Farmer Le Quang Hoan shared: "When the rice is growing strongly, the rats come to bite and destroy a lot, so I use composted chicken manure to fertilize the rice. When the rice is about 10 days early, I continue to fertilize with composted chicken manure and the effect is obvious when the rats no longer come to destroy the rice fields."

According to Mr. Le Quang Hoan, using composted chicken manure to fertilize rice fields, chicken manure has a strong, pungent smell due to containing a lot of ammonia and uric acid, which can make rats uncomfortable and keep them away from rice areas. Chicken manure has a high protein content, which can change the taste of rice or cause the rice to have some compounds that rats do not like.

Mr. Hoan also found that rice fertilized with composted chicken manure has a certain amount of minerals and microorganisms that are difficult for rats to digest or make them feel unappetizing.

In addition, chicken manure is highly acidic, which changes the pH of the soil, affecting the flavor of the rice. Mice have a very sensitive sense of smell, so they can recognize this change and avoid eating the rice.

The rice fields of farmer Le Quang Hoan in Sen Thuy commune (Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province) are fertilized with composted chicken manure and grow evenly and beautifully.

"Thanks to these advantages, fertilizing with chicken manure not only helps rice plants grow well but can also naturally limit rats from destroying rice fields. In my practical experience, I have tested the summer-autumn crop of 2024 and found that the rice grows evenly and beautifully, is not damaged by rats, and has outstanding productivity," said Mr. Le Quang Hoan.

According to an agricultural expert in Quang Binh, chicken manure is a valuable source of natural nutrients that helps improve soil and increase rice productivity. However, if not treated and used properly, chicken manure can attract rats, affecting crops.

It is known that farmer Le Quang Hoan (in Sen Thuy commune, Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province) mainly grows and processes pepper, a fragrant spice with a spicy taste, the product has been recognized as a 4-star OCOP Quang Binh product.

His Sen Thuy Clean Agricultural Products Production and Trading Cooperative currently has 8 hectares of pepper growing land, including 3 hectares of organic pepper and 10 hectares linked with 50 households in Sen Thuy and Thai Thuy communes (Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province).

The cooperative constantly invests in purchasing modern machinery and equipment. Each year, the cooperative sells about 15 tons of dry pepper, with a total value of more than 1 billion VND.
