According to the specialized agency, the World Health Organization (WTO) classifies yellow O as a carcinogen. In China, yellow O has also been banned since 2008. In Vietnam, according to information from the Food Safety Department, Ministry of Health, yellow O is a banned substance. Testing yellow O and cadmium residue in exported durian is a requirement of the import market and must be complied with.
Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Lak province, Nguyen Hoai Duong, said: In response to new regulations from the import market on checking yellow O in durian, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development urgently directed the Plant Protection Department to hold an online meeting (morning of January 10) to notify localities, export enterprises, packaging facilities and producers to know and comply with the regulations.
Dak Lak province had 50 people attending the meeting with many related parties. In addition, the Plant Protection Department urgently negotiated with the Chinese side to recognize centers and testing rooms qualified to test yellow O substance in Vietnam. By January 26, 2025, Vietnam had 9 centers and testing rooms for yellow O substance in durian accepted by China.
Currently, Dak Lak province has 68 durian growing areas granted export codes, with a total area of 2,521 hectares; 23 durian packaging facilities have been granted codes.
To meet the new regulations from the importing country, the solution that needs to be implemented is to negotiate with China to have more recognized Cadmium and Yellow O testing laboratories; to propagate the growing areas and durian packaging facilities to pay attention to the use of fertilizers and pesticides, not to use additives and colorants, especially yellow and green; to closely monitor, inspect and regularly check the growing areas and packaging facilities that have been granted codes in compliance with the regulations of the import market...
Growing areas and packaging facilities must uphold responsibility and strictly follow cultivation processes such as irrigation water, fertilizers, pesticides, etc. In particular, do not use yellow O to process and package durian and proactively test for Cadmium and yellow O residues in durian shipments for export.
