Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Phan Van Mai hopes that the health sector will soon transform digitally by linking data, helping patients only have to test, perform clinical tests, and procedures once.
Mr. Mai's opinion was expressed at a meeting to celebrate the 69th anniversary of Vietnamese Doctors' Day with leaders of medical facilities in Ho Chi Minh City on the afternoon of February 26.
According to the head of the Ho Chi Minh City government, it is necessary to focus on developing and forming smart healthcare, taking care of people not only through good examination and treatment but also through related procedures. This helps reduce costs, the treatment process is fast, convenient, effective, and most economical.
Mr. Mai highly appreciated the achievements of the Ho Chi Minh City medical sector. For example, the first fetal heart catheterization techniques in Southeast Asia are not only the joy and pride of the city's medical sector but also the national achievement, contributing to the development of world medicine.
"Doctors are valuable human resources, medical units are an indispensable part of the city's overall development process," said Mr. Mai, adding that medical staff, with their professional capacity, professional ethics, and dedication to always thinking of patients, have made an important contribution to caring for and protecting people's health.
After the Covid-19 outbreak, Ho Chi Minh City has issued many orientations, plans, and policies for the health sector, such as policies to support the network of community health collaborators. This year, the health sector needs to focus on effectively implementing the issued policies, while continuing to research new orientations for further development, according to Mr. Mai.

The city continues to focus on prevention work and invest in improving the capacity of primary health care. In particular, it is necessary to effectively implement the mental health care program, because this is an area that needs attention in the context of urban life with many pressures and stresses. In addition, it is necessary to focus on research to have appropriate action strategies for the current population aging process, helping to improve the quality of life, so that people can live long and healthy lives.
In treatment, in addition to investing in equipment and improving human resources, more investment is needed in infection control, nutrition, and nursing. These are important factors affecting the success rate of treatment, and there are differences between hospitals. Therefore, large hospitals and central hospitals need to share experiences and support smaller hospitals to do this well.
According to Mr. Mai, with the project of developing specialized healthcare, it is necessary to focus on developing expertise and technology. Focus on forming a network of excellent centers to develop the city's healthcare to be on par with the region and the world.
"I'm not saying that robots will replace doctors at some point, but right now robots can do many of the jobs doctors do, and artificial intelligence (AI) can do them," said Mr. Mai. Therefore, human resource training also needs to meet the needs and practical development of technology, and a project on young talents in the medical field should be implemented soon.
The health sector also needs to promote the development of the pharmaceutical industry, medical supplies, military-civilian medical coordination, Eastern and Western medicine, regional linkages and especially international cooperation.
The Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee said that the Party committees, authorities and the health sector need to promptly pay attention to investing and taking care of the material and spiritual lives of medical staff, because this profession is very stressful, and many people still have very difficult lives when they retire.
