Eyes swollen for a month, shocked when doctor removed many pieces of wood

Information from the Ho Chi Minh City Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, the unit has just performed surgery to remove a foreign object consisting of many pieces of wood stuck in the eye of a patient from Tra Vinh for many days.

The patient is Mr. TLĐ., 19 years old. A month before, D. was riding a motorbike and fell into a wooden fence. He was hospitalized for internal medicine at Tra Vinh Hospital for one day. Because his right eye was swollen for a month and medication did not help, he went to an eye hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for examination, then to the Ho Chi Minh City Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital for examination.

At the hospital, the CT scan of the nose and sinuses showed that he had a fractured right orbital floor, displaced right orbital floor bone, a long foreign object piercing from the orbit into the right maxillary sinus, about 45mm in size, along with maxillary sinusitis and right ethmoid sinusitis.

Doctors then performed endoscopic surgery to open the right maxillary sinus and remove foreign objects, which were pieces of wood, from the patient.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hai, Deputy Head of the Nose and Sinus Department, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, if left for a long time, foreign objects can cause infection, reduced vision, and sepsis, which is life-threatening.

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Vinh - Deputy Director of the Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, recommends that if after a facial injury, the patient has one of the following symptoms: facial swelling, blurred vision, double vision, prolonged wound pus discharge, foul-smelling nasal discharge, prolonged nosebleeds, etc., they should go to the hospital immediately and not be subjective with prolonged symptoms even if they are not painful.

For injuries caused by traffic accidents or trauma... the initial treatment principle is to explore the wound and completely remove foreign objects before suturing the wound. If a foreign object is found to be left behind, it must be treated promptly.
