Ms. Shitsui Hakoishi, born on November 10, 1916, into a farming family in Nakagawa, was recognized by Guinness World Records as the "world's oldest female barber" on March 5.
In 1931, Shitsui Hakoishi left her hometown and went to Tokyo to learn a trade at a small hair salon and obtained her license at the age of 20. She later married and opened a hair salon with her husband. They had two children before her husband died in the war and the salon was destroyed in an air raid. In 1953, she returned to Nakagawa and opened another salon.
The world’s oldest female hairdresser says she’s not ready to put away the scissors just yet. “I’m 109 this year, I’ll keep going until I’m 110,” she smiles confidently.

In 2020, Shitsui Hakoishi was chosen to be the torchbearer for the Tokyo Olympics. Every day, she walks more than 1,000 steps carrying a device that weighs the same as the torch.
When asked about the secret to longevity, Ms. Shitsui Hakoishi said that every day she follows a healthy diet with light foods, little spices, oil, etc. At the same time, she maintains walking and physical exercises every morning.
