Dr. Pham Huy Hieu is currently a lecturer at the Institute of Computer Science and Engineering; a research expert and Deputy Director of the VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Center, Director of the Startup Center (E-lab), VinUni University. Last year, he was the youngest person to be honored in the Golden Globe Science and Technology Award (awarded by the Central Youth Union and the Ministry of Science and Technology).
Talking about the opportunity to pursue in-depth research on artificial intelligence and data science, Mr. Hieu said that after graduating from Hanoi University of Science and Technology in 2015, he continued to do PhD research in computer science at Toulouse University (France).

According to him, the characteristics of the field of artificial intelligence and data science do not stand alone but only maximize their power when applied to create and promote the development of other fields. In particular, healthcare is an extremely important field and is developing very quickly.
After completing his PhD program in France, in 2019 he returned to Vietnam to work at the Big Data Research Institute at Vingroup Corporation as a research expert.
"At that time, the institute's leaders had a vision to develop medical image analysis technology to help doctors diagnose faster and more accurately. I felt I could participate and apply what I had learned here," Dr. Hieu shared.
As a researcher, scientist and trainer, Dr. Pham Huy Hieu always tries to create good solutions, apply them to the community to create an impact on society. He said he has never asked himself what he is most satisfied and passionate about, because work has real meaning when it creates benefits for people.

During his work and research, he has many inventions and innovations of high scientific and practical value. In particular, he has devoted much effort and expectation to the solution "VAIPE: Smart healthcare monitoring and support system for Vietnamese people".
According to him, the biggest medical challenge in Vietnam today is public health. Most people go to the hospital when they are very sick, the chance of treatment and being able to treat well is very low.
The idea of the VAIPE solution comes from the desire for each citizen to proactively take care of their own health through a technology application, for example on a smartphone. From there, it collects, stores and displays information such as heart rate, blood pressure, medication taking behavior and is more proactive in taking care of their health. The application can make predictions and health risks so that people can get early examinations, improving treatment capabilities.
"This solution is cheap, people do not have to depend on income, geographic area or social class," said Mr. Hieu.
Despite many admirable achievements, according to Mr. Pham Huy Hieu, every job has its difficulties and challenges, even daily difficulties. When applying new technology to solve medical problems, he and his colleagues often face 3 major challenges.
First is to correctly define the "problem" before starting research, whether the "problem" is worth solving and if so, what impact will it have on society.
Second, in the field of artificial intelligence and data science, the core issue is clean, standardized data with human knowledge in it. Dr. Hieu believes that collecting large-scale data with human knowledge requires a lot of effort, resources and finance.
The final and most difficult challenge, according to him, is not technology, but bringing research results to the market, applying them in practice and creating impact. "Because not every good solution is accepted by the market," said Mr. Pham Huy Hieu.
Giving a message to young people who are passionate about artificial intelligence, data science, and smart healthcare, Mr. Hieu advises them to be more proactive in observing what is happening in life. Ask yourself what you can do, what you can improve, whether small or big. "When you have the spirit of dedication, contribution, and doing useful things, you will be recognized," Mr. Hieu shared.
Dr. Pham Huy Hieu was honored with the Golden Globe Science and Technology Award (awarded by the Central Youth Union and the Ministry of Science and Technology).
He has also published 50 scientific articles in prestigious international journals and conferences, including 20 scientific articles in Q1 journals and 06 top Rank A/A* conference articles in the fields of artificial intelligence, computer vision and smart medicine.
In addition, he has many technology solutions to solve Vietnam's medical challenges such as "VinDr medical imaging diagnostic software based on artificial intelligence technology", which effectively supports doctors in cancer screening and detecting incurable diseases. This solution has been deployed in more than 40 hospitals across the country and handles more than 300,000 patients per month and is evaluated by doctors as helping to reduce errors and support screening.
