According to Mr. Ha Anh Duc, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment (Ministry of Health), smart healthcare is becoming an advanced trend, helping to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment. However, the implementation of new technology still faces many challenges, from inadequate infrastructure to lack of synchronization in human resource training.
The Ministry of Health has just issued a set of hospital quality criteria towards developing smart healthcare. Sir, what are the difficulties in implementing this set of criteria?
The issuance of Circular No. 35/2024/TT-BYT by the Ministry of Health is an important step forward in improving the quality of medical examination and treatment. However, the implementation still faces many difficulties. One of the major challenges is that applying these criteria requires hospitals to make large investments in facilities, equipment and human resources.
Hospitals, especially at the grassroots level, face difficulties in recruiting and retaining staff with the necessary expertise and skills. In addition, work processes and quality management systems in some hospitals are not uniform, leading to ineffective implementation of the criteria.
How do you evaluate the implementation of smart healthcare in hospitals today?
Smart healthcare allows doctors to access and analyze electronic medical records instantly, making diagnosis and treatment more accurate. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data analytics help detect diseases early, provide optimal treatment regimens, and minimize errors in the healthcare process.
The application of technology applications such as online appointment scheduling, cashless payment, and receiving test results online has helped patients reduce waiting time. The system of reminders for follow-up appointments and remote support via online platforms also helps patients in treatment.
Smart hospital management systems help optimize workflows and reduce administrative workload for healthcare workers. The implementation of smart healthcare also helps develop a telemedicine model, helping patients who cannot go to the hospital still receive timely consultation and treatment. This is especially important for remote areas where access to healthcare services is limited.
However, as I said, despite such benefits, in reality, many hospitals, especially in rural and remote areas, face difficulties in funding and human resources, making it difficult to implement smart healthcare.
In your opinion, what should hospitals do to overcome these difficulties and make the most of the benefits of smart medical technology?
Along with raising awareness of the importance of digital transformation for hospitals, policy support from the Ministry of Health and relevant authorities is needed, especially prioritizing investment in smart medical technology from the state budget and socialized programs.
In addition, hospitals need to focus on training medical staff, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge to use new technologies. Another important factor is to build a monitoring and feedback system to promptly detect problems and make timely adjustments.
Can you share specific examples of how smart healthcare has helped improve the quality of medical examination and treatment at some hospitals?
A clear example of smart healthcare implementation and improved quality of medical examination and treatment is the application of electronic health records (EMR) systems in large hospitals. Before EMR, patient information was often recorded manually, leading to many errors and time-consuming when needed to look up.
With EMR, all patient information from medical history, test results, to treatment instructions are stored accurately and easily accessible, helping doctors to continuously monitor patient health and make quick and accurate treatment decisions.
In addition, the implementation of the hospital management system (HIS) at medical facilities is also an important breakthrough, helping to optimize coordination, bed management, and monitor the work efficiency of departments such as testing, pharmacy, or nursing.
Thanks to this system, hospitals can have tighter control over resources, allocate beds appropriately and reduce overload or shortage of equipment and medicine. Thereby, work efficiency is improved, helping doctors and medical staff have more time to care for patients.
