Young teacher Nong Thi Thu Dieu could not hold back her tears after going through a difficult journey on the first day of receiving the school and witnessing the difficulties that highland students have to overcome every day.
Recently, a clip recording a beautiful girl crying in the middle of the road with the surrounding scene of deserted hills and winding roads making it difficult to travel by motorbike attracted the attention of the online community. The clip received more attention when many people knew that the girl was a teacher teaching at a school in the highlands.
After watching the clip, many people expressed sympathy for the difficulties and challenges that teachers and students in the highlands face. Many people encouraged and wished the young teacher “strength and courage” to firmly bring letters to the children in the highlands.
Sharing with VietNamNet reporter, teacher Nong Thi Thu Dieu (born in 2001, teacher at Ta Xay school, Xuan Truong Kindergarten, Bao Lac district, Cao Bang province) said she was quite surprised when the clip recorded on February 10 received much attention from the online community.
Ms. Diu said that because her house is about 140km away from her assigned teaching location, she rented a room in the center of Xuan Truong commune. To get to the school, the teacher has to travel a winding, bumpy 10km road every day.
On the morning of February 10, after arriving in Bao Lac town to receive the recruitment decision, in the afternoon of the same day, she and a friend went to receive the Ta Xay school location.
Even though she had a male friend drive her, the young teacher still couldn't help but feel her heart skip a beat every time she passed the small roads with many steep slopes and sharp turns, with cliffs and deep abysses on both sides.
The clip was recorded on the way home and the young teacher tried driving for a while. “Although I was mentally prepared when assigned to teach at a school in a remote area, I did not expect everything to be more difficult than I imagined. Looking at the road to school, I felt sorry for the students when thinking about the distance they had to walk to school every day... At that time, I had too many emotions in my head. I burst into tears because I felt sorry for the students and the people here, but I was a bit scared of the road ahead because I had never driven like that before,” Ms. Diu shared.
However, the young teacher knows that many colleagues across the country have to travel longer and more difficult routes to reach the school. “I consider myself luckier than many others. Therefore, I always tell myself that no matter how difficult the conditions are, I must try my best, all for the sake of the students,” Ms. Diu said.
Ms. Diu said that Ta Xay school includes preschool and primary school. 100% of the people here are Mong ethnic group, and their lives are still in poverty. The whole school has only 2 teachers, who directly teach and take care of meals for the children. Ms. Diu is in charge of preschool, a colleague is in charge of primary school.
After 2 weeks of teaching, the young teacher gradually got used to it. On weekends, she spent time practicing riding a motorbike, going over slopes and curves to gain more control.
She said she was no longer afraid and could drive her motorbike to school by herself. However, every day, it took Diu nearly an hour to get to school and about the same amount of time to return to her boarding house.
The young teacher shared that she gradually realized that the challenge for teachers in mountainous areas is not only the bumpy roads but more importantly, how to get students to school more often.
Becoming a teacher has also been the childhood dream of the Cao Bang girl. At the end of grade 12, she registered only one wish, which was the Preschool Education Department of Hanoi National University of Education. As one of the 5 excellent graduates of the Preschool Education Department of Hanoi National University of Education in 2024, faced with many opportunities, the young girl chose to return to her hometown to teach. This decision of Diu surprised many people.
During her two weeks at Ta Xay school, there were some cold and rainy days. When she got home, Diu was exhausted and didn't want to do anything. "But perhaps it was the innocence and carefree nature of my students that made me want to contribute more," said Ms. Diu.
For Diu, being a preschool teacher is also one of the ways she can contribute to building her hometown. With her enthusiasm and love for the job, the young teacher is determined to nurture green shoots in the place where she was born and raised.
