Faced with the continuing trend of online fraud targeting the elderly, in November 2023, the Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications) and Google launched the "Online Safety Handbook" focusing on the elderly with the goal that young people can guide the elderly to use the Internet more safely and help narrow the gap between generations, creating a safe, healthy and beneficial Internet environment for all ages.

Before Tet, the Department of Information Security and Google continued to build a video simulating online fraud situations that the elderly often encounter and providing instructions on how to handle them.

Notably, in this newly released video, the informational content for the elderly was presented by artist Xuan Bac through witty and memorable verses, emphasizing the message "Raise vigilance - Update regularly - Live happily".

Titled “Stay safe online, live happily with Google”, the video simulates three online scam situations that older adults often encounter and provides instructions on how to handle each situation.

The scenarios include: Fake websites, applications of unknown origin, and account hijacking. The video content is presented by artist Xuan Bac through witty and memorable poems, emphasizing the message "Raise your vigilance - Update regularly - Live with peace of mind".

This is a meaningful spring gift that the Department of Information Security wants to send to people this Tet holiday.

In activities towards World Cyber Safety Day 2024, Google conducted a survey of 1,248 Vietnamese internet users about online information security.

The survey found that 90% of users have been exposed to online scams and more than 70% have been victims. The over-55 age group is particularly vulnerable, with 49% having been scammed.

According to Google's analysis, the top 3 reasons why older adults fall for online scams are: Not realizing the situation is a scam (48%); the deal or prize seems attractive (39%); feeling curious (38%).

In terms of the influence of habits, 78% of users with unsafe online habits have been scammed, higher than the corresponding figure of 66% in the group of users with safe online habits.

Some common unsafe habits include: Using easy-to-remember combinations as passwords, using the same password for multiple accounts, or ignoring warnings from web browsers or app stores. For example, using simple passwords, the survey found that 33% of users over 55 years old have this habit, the highest rate among all age groups.

Note that, internet users in Vietnam do not have clear differences in fraud rates between rural and urban groups or by time online.

Specifically, people living in rural areas have a 69% rate of being scammed - compared to 73% in the urban area. The rate of being scammed in the group that spends a lot of time online (more than 7 hours/day in the last 3 months) is 69% - compared to 75% in the group that spends less time online. Thus, being careful in online habits is the factor that has the greatest impact on the ability to prevent and combat online fraud .
