Using reasons related to tuition fees, student discipline... to commit fraud
On March 13, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law said it had recorded a number of cases where students received calls or text messages from strange phone numbers, impersonating the school's identity to threaten, request personal information or commit fraudulent acts.
According to a representative of Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, these subjects may cite reasons related to academic affairs, tuition fees, student discipline, etc. to cause confusion and fraud.
At the same time, the school requires students not to provide personal information or bank accounts when receiving requests from strange phone numbers. Calmly verify information through official channels before taking any action.
"Students need to immediately report to the admissions consulting office, student affairs office, relevant departments or authorities when detecting signs of fraud.
For any questions, students should contact the school's official channels for timely support. If they encounter sudden difficulties in life, in study, need material or spiritual assistance..., students can contact us to consider solutions to help," the school noted.
Forged documents to defraud parents and students
Previously, many universities in Ho Chi Minh City in recent days have continuously warned about fraud targeting students and parents with sophisticated tricks.
The Student Affairs Department of the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University) has just informed parents and students of the school about the continued occurrence of fake documents (under the name of the University of Natural Sciences) sent to parents and students about issues such as invitations to participate in academic exchange programs, cultural exchanges abroad, scholarships, etc.
While school announcements are all made public on school websites, faculties and official fanpages of schools, faculties and functional units, and full contact information.
"The school only sends to parents and students through the school's email system with identification. When receiving documents of unknown origin and authenticity, parents and students need to proactively find out the content of the notification appearing on the school's or faculty's website and compare the information to verify it.
At the same time, contact the school's functional units to discuss and grasp information from the notice; do not arbitrarily or proactively discuss with any individual who sent the notice directly," the school representative noted.
The University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) has also issued a warning about fraud targeting students and parents with increasingly sophisticated tricks, combining impersonation of authorities and forgery of school documents.
According to the school, a common scam is impersonating authorities to threaten and manipulate psychology. Fraudsters impersonate police or prosecutors, calling or texting students to inform them that they are involved in cases such as money laundering, drugs, or fraud. They ask them to keep it a secret and not share it with anyone. They force them to provide personal information, bank accounts, or money transfers to "prove financial status".
Fraudsters also forge school documents to deceive parents, take advantage of students' psychological manipulation, and provide fake documents such as scholarship acceptance notices, admission confirmation letters, and debt proof papers.
Documents with fake school logos and signatures to increase persuasiveness. Students are instructed to use these fake documents to deceive their families and borrow money to "solve problems".
Regarding how to identify this scam, the schools said that these documents do not follow any prescribed document format (regarding the governing unit, issuing unit, national emblem, motto, document numbering, issuing unit/position...). The documents are drafted roughly, without specific contact information (email, phone number of units in the school).
