Dong Nai Department of Construction has just proposed to renovate and form squares associated with important historical sites and relics in Bien Hoa city. The goal is to preserve and promote local cultural values and create a community living space for people.
Perspective of proposed renovation of the Citadel.
According to the Department, Bien Hoa, although a large urban area, still lacks many cultural facilities such as theaters, cultural centers, squares, and stadiums. Some facilities have been built but are not up to standard. The situation of “both lacking and weak” in investment in cultural facilities is a big challenge for the city.
Among the proposals, the most prominent are the establishment of Song Pho Square and Thanh Co Square. These are two major historical sites of the province.
The Citadel is associated with the 325-year historical mark of Bien Hoa's development, with unique architectural and cultural features, and is a space for people to enjoy. The Department of Construction proposed the idea of forming a square located at the Citadel. Creating an independent space, like an outdoor "room" for people to visit. This square is surrounded by the facades of surrounding buildings and is open to Phan Chu Trinh street, creating a feeling of closeness, safety, and friendliness.
Previously, for this square, architect Dang Quang Vinh thought that the connecting space would extend from Bien Hoa Citadel through Phan Chu Trinh Street to Dong Nai River. Creating a community living area, opening up a vibrant and new living space.
The existing Song Pho Square has no community space.
Similarly, Song Pho Square, a national monument since 1991, is the main intersection between Cach Mang Thang Tam Street and 30/4 Street. Song Pho Square is connected to two other national monuments: Bien Hoa Citadel (about 100m away) and Binh Truoc Assembly Hall (about 20m away). From this intersection, people can go to the central areas and routes of Bien Hoa city.
Currently, this area is suffering from traffic congestion due to vehicle density and surrounding constructions, losing its inherent community function.
Around Song Pho Square there is the Provincial People's Committee, many schools, churches...
The Department of Construction proposes to renovate the Song Pho Square area into a long space, like a connecting corridor, with the starting and ending points being typical cultural works. The new space will serve community activities such as exhibitions, art performances and regular cultural events.
The reorganization of these two squares will be based on the principle of not directly affecting historical relics, but focusing on improving the space and landscape, creating conditions for people to connect, learn and enjoy local culture. This is also a way to increase the value of relics, preserve the soul of Bien Hoa land through vibrant and unique cultural spaces.
