75 years of Vietnam - Hungary: 'sufficient conditions for increasingly strong relations'

On the morning of March 19, Ho Chi Minh City solemnly held a ceremony to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam - Hungary diplomatic relations (February 3, 1950 - February 3, 2025).

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Vo Van Hoan affirmed that this is an extremely important and meaningful milestone in the relationship between the two countries.

Mr. Vo Van Hoan recalled the help that Hungarian friends gave to the Vietnamese people in the struggle for national independence and reunification.

Mr. Hoan also reviewed the milestones in the Vietnam-Hungary political relationship, including high-level official visits between the two countries. In September 2018, during the visit to Hungary by the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Vietnam and Hungary upgraded their relationship to the level of Comprehensive Partnership. In January 2024, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh visited Hungary and discussed with Prime Minister Viktor Orban major orientations and specific measures to elevate the Comprehensive Partnership to a new level.

The Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee also mentioned activities to maintain and strengthen the relationship between the city and Hungary. Mr. Vo Van Hoan highlighted the role of the Hungarian Consulate General and Consul General Lehőcz Gábor in introducing the country and culture of Hungary to the city's people.

Specifically, the Consulate General of Hungary in Ho Chi Minh City has just organized the Hungarian Cuisine Week. In December 2024, the Teqball World Championship was held for the first time in Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr. Hoan said that the Ho Chi Minh City government is committed to continuing to create conditions for the Hungarian Consulate General and its partners to expand cooperation in many fields.

In his speech, Consul General Lehőcz Gábor mentioned that Hungary was one of the first countries to recognize Vietnam's independence. After establishing diplomatic relations, the two countries have promoted cooperation in all fields.

Hungary participated in and actively supported the ratification of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement in 2020. According to the agreement, 99% of bilateral trade will be duty-free by 2030. Mr. Gábor said that the total annual export turnover between the two countries has exceeded the 1 billion USD mark for 3 consecutive years (2020, 2021, 2022) and Vietnam is the largest Southeast Asian exporter to Hungary during this period.

According to the diplomat, on this important anniversary, all conditions have fully converged for the Vietnam - Hungary relationship to become increasingly strong.

Ho Chi Minh City - Hungary Relations

In September 2015, within the framework of the visit to Hungary by the Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Ho Chi Minh City and the capital Budapest upgraded the Memorandum of Understanding on establishing and strengthening cooperative relations to a Friendship and Cooperation Agreement with priority given to strengthening relations in the fields of economy, tourism, water management, culture, education, urban management and urban infrastructure.

In 2017, the Government of District 1 (HCMC) and District 11 of Budapest signed an Agreement to establish friendly cooperation relations.

In August 2024, Standing Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee Nguyen Ho Hai visited and worked in Hungary, having many important meetings with leaders of the Ministry of Culture and Creativity, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Hungarian Workers' Party, and the Budapest Government to promote cooperation in many fields.

As of January 2025, Hungary has 9 investment projects in Ho Chi Minh City with a total investment capital of more than 9.2 million USD, ranking 46th out of 127 countries and territories investing in the city. Total trade turnover between Ho Chi Minh City and Hungary in 2024 will reach 149.8 million USD, an increase of 77% compared to 2023.
