(NLDO) - District 1 is developing a plan to rearrange administrative units by arranging 10 wards into 2 or 3 wards.

On the afternoon of March 19, Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc led a working delegation to District 1 to discuss the socio-economic situation in the area.

One of the important contents discussed at the working session was the organization arrangement as well as the thoughts and aspirations of the staff, civil servants, public employees and workers.

Head of the District 1 Party Committee Organization Board Ta Hoai Nam said that the locality is developing a plan to rearrange administrative units in the direction of arranging 10 wards into 2 or 3 wards.

With the plan to arrange 10 wards into 2 wards, 3 wards, Da Kao, Tan Dinh, Ben Nghe, will be merged into Ben Nghe ward; the remaining 7 wards will be merged into Ben Thanh ward. This plan is more favorable because it maintains the current administrative boundaries.

The plan to arrange 10 wards into 3 wards is to arrange the wards along the main roads, dividing the district into 3 wards. However, this plan also rearranges the administrative boundaries, some wards will be divided.

According to Mr. Ta Hoai Nam, the two options above are only at the preliminary draft stage, still under discussion and not yet agreed upon.

After listening to opinions from District 1, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc suggested that the arrangement of administrative units could be studied beyond the administrative boundaries, not limited to the existing scope of the district. District 1 borders District 3, so it is possible to propose merging some wards of District 1 and District 3 that have similarities in terms of boundaries, economy, and population.

"We need to think big, act big, think beyond existing limitations, and propose solutions that go beyond current administrative boundaries," said the Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.

Ho Chi Minh City has undergone many rounds of administrative unit rearrangements. The most recent was in 2024 when the city rearranged 80 wards in 10 districts into 41 new wards, reducing 39 wards according to Resolution 1278/2024 of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the rearrangement of commune-level administrative units in Ho Chi Minh City in the 2023-2025 period.

Currently, the city has 273 wards, communes and towns in 16 districts, 5 counties and one city.

At the meeting with Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc, District 1 continued to propose to temporarily use two land plots at 2-4-6 Hai Ba Trung Street and 8-12 Le Duan Street according to District 1's needs while waiting for the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to approve the land use plan in accordance with the planning.

In response to the above proposal, the Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee assigned the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to direct the Land Fund Development Center to coordinate with the People's Committee of District 1 to temporarily use the land according to the needs of the People's Committee of District 1, while waiting for the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to approve the land use plan in accordance with the planning.
