Applying digital transformation and high technology in sustainable forestry development not only helps trace the origin of raw forest materials and locate each forest patch, but can also measure the carbon and fine dust absorption capacity of each type of tree.

Thanks to the "app", you can measure how much fine dust and carbon the tree "absorbs".

That is the function of the i-Tree application developed by the University of Forestry (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) to build a scientific basis for applying advanced technology in urban tree management in Vietnam through the application of remote sensing technology and geographic information system (GIS) in determining the current status of urban trees. Through the application, it is possible to determine the carbon absorption capacity; the ability to absorb pollutants, adsorb dust and prevent rainwater runoff of urban trees.

The results show that the ability to absorb carbon; the ability to absorb fine dust; the ability to prevent rainwater runoff of trees such as soapberry, banyan, mango, and rosewood... is the best.

According to the report of the Vietnam Forestry Science Institute, researched and developed since 2017, the Vietnam Legal Timber Traceability System (iTwood system) is a digital technology application to organize and develop a legal timber supply chain and traceability, contributing to transparency of information on legal timber sources, traceability and improving the efficiency of forestry production and business; granting and managing codes for raw material forest growing areas; supporting forest fire management and fighting and certifying forest carbon credits.

In particular, regarding the issuance and management of raw material forest growing area codes implemented according to Decision No. 2260/QD-BNN-LN dated July 9, 2024 of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, 5 provinces of Bac Giang, Lang Son, Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang and Yen Bai have piloted through the iTwood System to create the first breakthroughs to establish raw material forest growing areas with codes to organize legal wood supply chains and traceability to meet the requirements of key wood and wood product export markets such as: the US, Japan, Korea and China.

After 4 months, 3/5 provinces have issued raw material forest growing area codes to 1,500 forest owners, with 3,350 hectares being certified. Up to now, the area registered for raw material forest growing area codes through the iTwood system nationwide has reached 67,000 hectares. The total number of subjects including forest owners, wood owners and enterprises/facilities processing and trading wood and wood products registering accounts on the iTwood System and conducting transactions is 1,569 subjects, mainly household forest owners (1,482 subjects).

One of the outstanding successes of the forestry sector in our country in recent times is the successful application of tissue culture technology to asexually propagate varieties of acacia, eucalyptus and some other high-value non-timber forest products such as Melaleuca, Melaleuca, and orchids... to serve large-scale afforestation. Currently, tissue culture houses across the country have annually produced more than 120 million high-quality seedlings for afforestation, contributing to improving the productivity and quality of planted forests.

Digital technology, solutions for sustainable forestry development

Mr. Tran Quang Bao, Director of the Forestry Department, emphasized that currently, there is not much land left to develop new plantation forests, so in order to improve the productivity and quality of plantation wood, the application of biotechnology to improve the quality of varieties is a very important solution.

"Currently, the average productivity of planted forests nationwide is only 15 - 18m3/ha/year, this number is still low, so it is necessary to select and create native tree species and apply technology to improve the productivity and quality of planted forests," said Mr. Bao.

Meanwhile, digital transformation applications and software in measurement and positioning will have an important position and role in managing, protecting, monitoring, and granting planting area codes for raw material forests.

Regarding the orientation of applying high technology and digital transformation in the forestry sector in the coming time, the Department of Forestry has determined to build a comprehensive digital forestry ecosystem, from forest management, resource exploitation, to environmental protection and sustainable development, improving the capacity to manage and monitor forest resources accurately and promptly through digital technology applications. Enhance the effectiveness of digital technology applications in the management and implementation of work of forestry agencies at all levels.

The Forestry Department also proposed a number of solutions to promote digital transformation in forestry such as: Investing in technology infrastructure/digital infrastructure; building a comprehensive database system (data warehouse) on forestry to store, enhance connectivity and share information nationwide.

Develop smart applications and services in the management and monitoring of forest resources, biodiversity of forest ecosystems and specific areas of the industry. Strengthen cooperation with technology enterprises and international organizations to mobilize resources and experience for the digital transformation process. Promote training of human resources with digital technology skills, while raising awareness of digital transformation for forestry officials at all levels. Establish a clear and unified legal mechanism for data management and information security to ensure efficiency and safety during implementation.
