Arriving at Gia village on the morning of March 7, 2025, we were taken by the Party Secretary of Gia village - O Rai Xuat and the Head of Chamaleá Nam village to visit the Thai jackfruit growing model of the Raglay people. About 2 km south of the center of Phuoc Ha commune, the Thai jackfruit growing land of 15 households with an area of 3 hectares along the Lu river bank appeared lush and green, with trees laden with fruit. The garden was well planned, with a road wide enough for motorbikes to transport harvested jackfruit to the Phuoc Ha - Phuoc Ninh inter-commune road. Walking among the sweet fragrance of jackfruit flowers and ripe Thai jackfruit, we met people taking care of the garden, friendly greeting visitors.
Coming to his family's garden filled with the fragrant scent of Thai jackfruit, Mr. Chamaleá Nam excitedly shared: Since the rainy season of 2019, the People's Committee of Phuoc Ha commune has provided seeds and plastic pipes for people to implement a model of growing Thai jackfruit with water-saving irrigation, adapting to climate change conditions. Each household is provided with 120 seedlings on an area of 2,000 m², pumping water from the Lu River for irrigation. People have established a Thai jackfruit growing association and are instructed by agricultural officials on care techniques, from soil preparation to fertilization, pest control and harvesting. After more than 2 years of taking root, the Thai jackfruit trees have grown well, producing high-quality fruit. People share their experiences in pruning branches and cutting fruit so that the trees can grow fruit well and maintain stable productivity.
Holding a Thai jackfruit weighing about 15 kg, Mr. Chamaleá Nam said that in the past, people on this land grew corn and beans that were fed by rainwater, so the yield was low and income was unstable. Thanks to the policy of converting crops, each household planted more than 100 Thai jackfruit trees on 2,000 m² of land. Currently, the Thai jackfruit trees are 5 years old, each tree yields an average of 2 fruits/batch, 2 batches are harvested each month, the selling price at the garden is 12,000 VND/kg. Each household has an income of about 1.5 million VND/month, helping people have more conditions to improve their quality of life and take care of their children's education. Typical households growing Thai jackfruit with high yield include Pa Tau Xa Nep, Ba Ra Thua, Chamaleá Nam, Ba Rau Dac, Ba Ra Cha, Ba Rau Nuc, etc.
Gia village currently has 238 households with 924 people. People's lives depend on income from 75 hectares of double-crop rice fields thanks to the Tan Giang and Song Bieu irrigation systems, along with raising more than 1,100 cattle and cultivating 189.6 hectares of swidden fields with one crop per year. Thanks to capital from national target programs on new rural construction and sustainable poverty reduction, people's lives have gradually improved. Currently, the village has 49 poor households, accounting for 20.5% of the total number of households.
“Implementing the Resolution of the Phuoc Ha Commune Party Congress for the 2025-2030 term, the Party cell committee led party members and mass organizations to mobilize people to expand the area of Thai jackfruit cultivation along the Lu River and plant more fruit trees with high economic value, striving to increase income from 28 million VND to 48 million VND/year by the end of 2025. Choosing a suitable economic model, associated with natural conditions and strengths of the locality, is opening up a new direction to help people increase income, escape poverty sustainably and build a solid new countryside,” Mr. O Rai Xuat, Secretary of the Gia village Party cell, shared.
