In the context of rice prices tending to decrease, many households in the Mekong Delta are still able to sell rice at high prices, especially in some places recording profits of up to 50 million VND/ha in the 2025 winter-spring crop thanks to the application of modern rice growing methods.
Editor's note: In the context of rice prices trending downward, many households in the Mekong Delta are still able to sell rice at high prices, especially in some places, profits of up to 50 million VND/ha in the 2025 winter-spring crop were recorded thanks to the application of modern rice growing methods.
Instead of sowing in the traditional way, using poor quality seeds, wasting a lot of fertilizer, pesticides, seeds and water, in many places in the Mekong Delta, farmers have boldly changed their production methods, linking with businesses to support inputs and outputs.
With that approach, along with policies and support from the Government, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the participation of ministries, branches and localities, and even businesses, farmers have been able to sell rice at high prices, helping to ensure profits and support farmers to overcome the current period of falling rice prices.
In a recent meeting on rice consumption, Minister of Agriculture and Environment Do Duc Duy also suggested that localities in the Mekong Delta actively develop high-quality rice production areas, reduce emissions, and link with businesses to stabilize output for rice growers. And that is also the inevitable development direction of the rice industry, in the context of increasingly fierce competition between exporting countries, especially when India decided to "open the warehouse".
There are places where farmers make a profit of 50 million VND/ha.
These days, members of the ST 25 rice production cooperative in Nga Nam town, Soc Trang province are harvesting winter-spring rice. Instead of being sad because of the falling rice price and sharp decline in income like other places, people here are still happy to say that the profit from this rice crop is up to 50 million VND/ha.

According to Dan Viet's records at the ST 25 rice production cooperative in Nga Nam town, led by Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep, about 70% of the total 27 hectares have been harvested. Thanks to boldly switching to high-quality varieties, this rice crop, farmers were able to sell at 8,900 VND/kg to businesses that contracted the crop.
Ms. Diep happily shared: "With the price of rice at 8,900 VND/kg and the yield of 7.6 tons/ha, farmers in the cooperative achieved an average profit of 50 million VND/ha. All rice is purchased by the enterprise according to the agreement."
According to Ms. Diep, in addition to guaranteeing output, the above enterprise also provides seeds, fertilizers, medicines and technical support for using biological fertilizers, so the production cost is only about 800,000 VND/cong (the enterprise supports 50% of input costs). Therefore, people in the cooperative can feel secure in production.
Mr. Tran Van Quan in Ward 2, Nga Nam Town - a member of the ST 25 rice production cooperative mentioned above, informed that in the 2025 winter-spring crop, he planted 4 hectares of ST 25 rice. When harvesting, Ho Quang Tri Private Enterprise purchased the rice at a price higher than the market price, and the investment cost was also supported a lot, so he was "very healthy".
Although not growing ST 25 rice, many farmers in other localities in the Mekong Delta still sell at higher prices than the market price by linking with rice growing enterprises. With this method, farmers not only receive input support and participate in the current new rice cultivation process, but also increase the selling price of rice (the associated enterprises buy rice at a higher price than the market price).
Like Mr. Tran Vu Chi - a rice farmer along Tan Cong Sinh 1 canal, Tan Cong Sinh commune, Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province. While the price of Dai Thom 8 rice of the surrounding people is only 6,600-6,700 VND/kg, he sells it for 7,700 VND/kg.
"I have 3 hectares of rice planted with Dai Thom 8 variety in the 2025 winter-spring crop. At the end of the crop, according to calculations, the profit will reach nearly 34 million VND/ha" - Mr. Chi said.
To achieve this profit, Mr. Chi reduced the seeding rate from 90 kg/ha to 60 kg/ha, reduced fertilizer application from 6 times to 3 times, and reduced pesticide spraying from 10 times to 5 times. This helped reduce investment costs to 16.8 million VND/ha.
Despite reducing all input factors, according to Mr. Chi, the rice still grows very well, with strong roots, long panicles, and many grains. Accordingly, the rice yield reaches 8.7 tons/ha, much higher than the fields of the surrounding people. At harvest time, all rice is purchased by Vietnam Seed Group Joint Stock Company for export.
According to Mr. Chi, currently, most rice farmers are good at growing rice, but the most important thing is how to minimize costs, thereby increasing profits. In addition, reducing production costs (reducing fertilizer, pesticides, reducing irrigation water, etc.) also helps protect the general environment in rural areas, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Stimulate rice prices by linking production
In Kien Giang, Mr. Le Huu Toan - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kien Giang province said that for rice areas grown under the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta, farmers have a profit of 30-35 million VND/ha, which is 10 million VND higher than rice areas outside the model.
Mr. Tran Vu Chi's rice field (Tan Cong Sinh 1 canal, Tan Cong Sinh commune, Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province) grows Dai Thom 8 and sells it for 7,700 VND/kg, while the market price is only from 6,600-6,700 VND/kg. Photo: HX
In addition to the area participating in the project (2 models in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment piloted at Thanh Nien Phu Hoa Agricultural Service Cooperative, Tan Hoi commune, Tan Hiep district with 50 hectares and Thanh An Shrimp and Crab Rice Service Cooperative, Dong Thanh commune, An Minh district with 10 hectares; 10 models piloted by Kien Giang province), in the past, Kien Giang also had 60,000 hectares of farmers producing rice according to orders from 21 enterprises.
The main players are Tan Long Group Joint Stock Company, Trung An High-Tech Agriculture Joint Stock Company, Loc Troi Group Joint Stock Company,... Accordingly, most of this area was purchased at a higher price than the market according to the agreement from the beginning of the rice crop.
Regarding this issue, Mr. Pham Thai Binh - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Trung An High-Tech Agriculture Joint Stock Company said that farmers' fields in the Mekong Delta that cooperate with enterprises are all paid at high prices, some places buy at 9,000 VND/kg in the field with ST 25 rice.
Mr. Truong Manh Linh - representative of Tan Long Group Joint Stock Company said that farmers who cooperate to grow high-quality rice for export to Japan will not be affected much by market factors. "Recently, rice prices have decreased, but the company has purchased rice from the people at a very high price and farmers who follow suit have benefited greatly" - Mr. Linh informed.
Mr. Linh emphasized that the high-value market has great potential. In 2024 alone, the company will have about 20,000 tons of rice entering the Japanese market.
