Creating momentum for OCOP product development

Implementing the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program, in 2025, the whole province is expected to have 323 products participating in the OCOP product classification assessment. In order for the OCOP product development movement to develop sustainably and effectively, it is necessary to build points for displaying, introducing and selling these products (OCOP product sales points).

Multiple product outlets operate effectively

In 2020, Thien An One Member Limited Liability Company received more than 80 million VND from the province to build an OCOP product sales point at 108 Dao Su Tich Street (Bac Giang City). Thanks to effective business, from 2020 to now, the Company has invested more than 1.3 billion VND to upgrade the sales point with items such as: Equipping additional shelves, shelves, display cabinets, product preservation; air conditioning system; sales management software... The Company representative said that the support from the province is like a "push" for the Company to invest and expand its business. Thanks to that, the number of customers is increasing, the store's revenue is currently more than 1 billion VND/month, creating stable jobs for 3 workers.

Customers buy products at the display, introduction and support cooperatives to consume OCOP products - regional specialties of the Center for Supporting Cooperative Development of Bac Giang province.

Similarly, in 2020, Nguyen Thi Chinh, a business household at 454 Le Loi Street, Hoang Van Thu Ward (Bac Giang City), was also supported by the province to open a booth displaying OCOP products at home. According to Ms. Chinh, the store is currently selling more than 40 OCOP products of the province, all of which are processed and packaged products. To serve a variety of customers, in addition to products in the province, many famous OCOP products of other provinces are also displayed here, while at the same time paying attention to expanding the consumption "channel", thereby becoming a reliable point of sale for many people.

Bac Giang province currently has 415 OCOP products, of which 20 are 4-star products and the rest are 3-star products. Since 2020, localities in the province have built 16 OCOP product sales points, with total revenue reaching tens of billions of VND/year.

It is known that in 2020, the province supported 430 million VND to build 5 OCOP product sales points in the districts: Luc Nam, Yen The, Viet Yen town and Bac Giang city. In addition, Hiep Hoa district also built 1 OCOP product sales point in Thang town. These sales points are all located in densely populated areas, associated with tourist attractions, operating according to the self-service store model.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade, most of the models have been effective. Thanks to that, up to now, the whole province has formed 16 points of sale of OCOP products (Bac Giang city 6 points; Yen The district 3 points; Hiep Hoa district and Viet Yen town each unit 2 points; Son Dong, Luc Nam, Lang Giang districts each unit 1 point). Along with the support of the province, localities, enterprises, the Provincial Cooperative Union, cooperatives, households, ... participating in the OCOP program have invested billions of VND to build business models with total revenue reaching tens of billions of VND/year.

At the end of 2024, the Bac Giang Provincial Cooperative Development Support Center (under the Provincial Cooperative Union) will build a model "Display, introduction and support point for cooperatives to consume OCOP products - regional specialties" on the first floor of the Center's headquarters building, No. 367, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street (Bac Giang City). Thereby contributing to promoting and consuming the province's OCOP products, creating opportunities for consumers to shop and use quality products with clear origins.

Spread the experience

It is known that to achieve the above results, the OCOP product sales points all experienced difficulties, some had to stop operating (such as the point of the Agricultural Service and Technical Center of Viet Yen town). The main reasons are limited product promotion; small display space, lack of diversity of consumer goods; some OCOP products of the province are not favored by people compared to similar products of other provinces,...

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Luy, Head of the Bac Giang Rural Development Department, at this time, many entities are still hesitant when invited to display products at OCOP product sales points or attend fairs due to lack of funds for promotional activities. Recently, e-commerce has developed strongly but many businesses have not approached and applied it; some OCOP product sales points have joined e-commerce platforms but lack staff to close orders and respond to customers, so the consumption of goods is limited.

With the experience of the locality with the largest number of OCOP products (88 products) and the most effective OCOP product sales points in the province, Ms. Ha Ngoc Hoa, Deputy Head of the Department of Economy, Infrastructure and Urban Areas of Bac Giang city, shared that in addition to convenient and suitable locations, OCOP product sales points must choose managers with passion, knowledge and business skills.

In order for the points of sale to be effective and achieve the set goals, in addition to proposing the city to support funding, the Department also organizes tours for the subjects to learn from local experiences, acts as a bridge connecting with OCOP product subjects, organizes training on business skills and e-commerce. "In order to meet the consumption needs of the people and promote the development of the OCOP program, in the near future, the unit will advise the city to support the construction of a number of new OCOP product points of sale" - Ms. Hoa said.

Discussing this content, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, Deputy Director of the Center for Information Technology and Communications (Department of Science and Technology) acknowledged that, in addition to support from the government, entities establishing OCOP product sales points need to hone their business skills on digital platforms and invest in sales management software systems that meet requirements. At the same time, there must be technical staff and support staff to manage and handle orders and respond to customer feedback promptly, only then can they keep up with current business trends and create momentum for OCOP product development.
