During the Lunar New Year 2025, Northern village festivals were bustling with many wrestling arenas. Here, sports fans paid special attention to 100kg female wrestler Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc when she competed fairly and even won against male wrestlers.

Thanh Truc is currently a bright young talent of the Vietnam jiujitsu team. She has gone through a journey of determination to pursue a professional sports career.

A breath of fresh air for Vietnamese jiujitsu

Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc (born in 2005) is from Thanh Hoa. She is 1.7m tall and weighs 100kg. Thanh Truc got involved in sports at school, during a time when the wrestling team coaches came to look for talent.

Regarding the reason for being selected for the wrestling team, Thanh Truc happily said: "The teachers saw that I was stronger than my friends and could run fast, so they chose me. After that, I went home to ask my family for their opinion. Everyone supported me and told me that since I had chosen, I had to pursue it resolutely."

Starting in 2019, Thanh Truc practiced professional sports with wrestling and then switched to jiujitsu (a Brazilian martial art quite similar to wrestling).

After 5 years of training, Thanh Truc began to make her mark when she achieved impressive results at the continental level right in her first time on the international stage. She won 2 gold medals, 1 silver medal at the Asian Youth Championship and 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal at the Asian Championship in May 2024.

Thanh Truc used to weigh up to 120kg

Until now, martial arts teams have rarely had talent in the major weight classes. Therefore, the appearance and early demonstration of Thanh Truc's talent in the over 70kg weight class is bringing new hope to Vietnamese jiu-jitsu.

Before being called up to the national jiujitsu team, Thanh Truc weighed 120kg. The coaching staff created a strict weight loss program for her. Thanks to her perseverance and determination, she was able to lose 100kg.

Commenting on his student, coach Bui Dinh Tien of the Vietnamese jiujitsu team said: "Thanh Truc's strengths are her progressive spirit, always maintaining positive energy, and determination to achieve her goals.

Before calling Truc to the team, we also talked about the difficulties and harshness of pursuing professional sports. Because women, everyone wants to be beautiful, but for athletes, it will be more disadvantaged.

Unexpectedly, after hearing this, Truc was somewhat interested and wanted to challenge herself. Truc is a girl with personality, willing to sacrifice for sports. Like losing weight, after being advised by the coaching staff, Truc threw herself into training, practicing three shifts a day and even practicing overtime to reach the required weight."

Be confident with a healthy body

For professional athletes, especially in martial arts, losing or gaining weight is a difficult process. The reason is that depending on professional requirements, athletes in the 70kg category may have to be forced to compete in the under 60kg category or may have to gain tens of kilograms to compete in a heavier category for the sake of achievement.

The process of losing weight and gaining weight for athletes is therefore very difficult, from strict diets to extremely heavy exercises. Like Thanh Truc, in order to compete in the over 70kg category and maintain a weight of 100kg, she had to sacrifice her beauty and figure that girls often love.

Thanh Truc shared: "As a girl, everyone wants to be beautiful and buy clothes they like. However, I am not self-conscious, on the contrary, I am very confident in my 100kg body. For me, beauty lies in being healthy and suitable for the job I pursue. Instead of paying attention to gossip about my weight, I focus on training, trying every day to improve myself and aiming for higher achievements for Vietnamese sports."

Having lost her father at a young age and her mother recently passed away due to cancer, Thanh Truc was raised by her grandmother when her two brothers had to leave home to make a living. That difficult situation has shaped her will and spirit. The Asian championship was the beginning for the female boxer who dared to accept trading her feminine beauty to pursue a sports career, bringing glory to her country.
