During the state visit to Indonesia by General Secretary To Lam and his wife at the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, General Secretary To Lam and President Prabowo Subianto agreed to upgrade bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This is an important milestone commemorating the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Reply to Electronic Newspaper VTC News , Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Denny Abdi said that upgrading relations creates opportunities for the two countries to open up new cooperation potential, in which the trend is to exploit technology and innovation to develop ecosystems. He also believes that the Leaders will promote cooperation and inject new energy into Vietnam-Indonesia relations.
- Could you please tell us the significance of the two countries upgrading to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership? Why did the two countries choose this time to upgrade their bilateral relations?
Looking back at 70 years of bilateral relations and 12 years of Strategic Partnership, Indonesia and Vietnam have witnessed significant progress in politics, economy and socio-culture. General Secretary To Lam’s state visit not only boosted political trust but also created new business opportunities and enhanced people-to-people interactions.
2025 is an important milestone for both countries as we will celebrate the 80th anniversary of our Independence Day and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. I believe this is a great motivation to mark the upgrading of the Strategic Partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which includes a broader list of areas of cooperation.

- How does the Ambassador view Vietnam's development, especially Vietnam's foreign policy in the new era?
During my four years as Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam, I have been impressed by Vietnam’s development. In 2020-2021, it can be said that Vietnam is one of the few countries that has maintained positive growth during the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, in 2023-2024, Vietnam successfully organized many high-level exchanges with many heads of state, including major powers.
The Future of ASEAN Forum, initiated by Vietnam over the past two years, also reflects Vietnam’s leadership and commitment in foreign policy. The forum serves as a platform for ASEAN countries to approach and address emerging challenges – by promoting dialogue to discuss solutions, share best practices and learn from each other’s experiences.
Vietnam is on the right track. As Indonesia and Vietnam have new Leaders in 2024, the vision, strategies and policies set by the new leaders are expected to create breakthroughs in achieving national goals. In this regard, I believe that our Leaders will promote cooperation and inject new energy into Indonesia-Vietnam relations as the two countries strive towards a shared vision of becoming high-income economies by 2045, the 100th anniversary of Independence.

- What cooperation focuses and activities are expected to be promoted immediately after the two countries upgrade their relations, Ambassador?
Indonesia and Vietnam will continue to promote close cooperation in established areas such as agriculture, fisheries, trade and investment, to accelerate efforts to achieve the trade turnover target of 18 billion USD by 2028.
To achieve this, we will also expand cooperation to other areas that match our strengths, potentials and visions, such as high-tech industries, emerging technologies and sustainable development.
To further unlock the potential of the partnership, Indonesia and Vietnam should prioritize promoting cooperation in high value-added and research-based industries. These include semiconductors, electric vehicles, artificial intelligence and the digital economy. Such areas will create breakthroughs and promote rapid economic growth.
In 2024, we have witnessed important milestones with the establishment of Japfa Group’s Vaksindo vaccine plant in Hung Yen, Vietnam and VinFast’s electric vehicle plant in West Java, Indonesia, marking a strong commitment to high-tech and research-based industries. This will be the trend of cooperation between the two countries, which is to cooperate by exploiting technology and innovation to develop ecosystems.
Cooperation in the Halal industry (industries that cater to the needs of Muslim consumers) is also one of the desirable directions. If this can be promoted, Indonesia and Vietnam can open up new trade and investment opportunities, especially to meet the growing demand for Halal products and services in the region.
The construction of the Salamad Indonesia mosque in An Giang province, scheduled for completion this year, is expected to pave the way for this cooperation between the two countries.
