Son La farmers account for more than 80% of the province's population, and the number of farmer households accounts for more than 78% of the total agricultural households. In recent years, promoting emulation movements, farmers' associations at all levels in the province have replicated many good production and business models.
Mai Son District Farmers' Association has 291 branches with over 20,000 members. The Association focuses on implementing emulation movements for good production and business; coordinating with agencies and organizations to propagate and mobilize members to change their thinking, switch from traditional production methods to applying science and technology, reducing labor. At the same time, regularly organize training, transfer of fertilization techniques, and pest control for each type of plant according to growth stage, improving productivity and economic efficiency.
With the help of the Farmers' Association, many members have applied science and technology to production and formed specialized fruit growing areas, developed livestock farming models in the direction of family farms, applied high technology, such as: red-fleshed dragon fruit growing model, custard apple, passion fruit, longan, mango, strawberry growing model, 3B cow raising model. Up to now, the whole district has built 4 high-tech agricultural production areas, with a total area of 1,773 hectares, with 2,333 participating households; over 5,400 hectares of crops are cared for in the direction of high technology application; 2,700 hectares of fruit trees are produced in the direction of organic production. The average income value per hectare of cultivated land reaches 92.3 million VND.
Bao Sam Agricultural Cooperative, Chieng Luong Commune (Mai Son District) is a typical example in the emulation movement of good farmers in production and business, with 18 members, growing more than 30 hectares of passion fruit and collaborating with households in Co Noi, Chieng Luong and Phieng Pan communes to grow nearly 70 hectares of passion fruit. On average, each hectare yields 35 tons of fruit, earning a profit of 250-300 million VND/ha.
Implementing the movement "Farmers compete in production, good business, unite to help each other get rich and reduce poverty sustainably", the Farmers' Association of Muong Lam commune, Song Ma district has propagated and mobilized members and farmers in the commune to build and replicate effective economic models; put into production high-value crop varieties with product consumption contracts, focusing on specialized cultivation associated with cooperative development.
In 2020, Mr. Tong Van Cuong, Muong Nua village, Muong Lam commune, Song Ma district, was supported with 23 3B breeding cows from the National Target Program on New Rural Development. Along with proactively sourcing food, Mr. Cuong used rice husks and sawdust as biological bedding to treat odors from manure and wastewater from livestock, helping to save costs and develop the herd well. Along with that, he also planted 4 hectares of longan and mango and operated excavator and bulldozer services. The total annual income is over 500 million VND. For many consecutive years, Mr. Tong Van Cuong has achieved the title of good farmer in production and business at all levels.
The Farmers' Association of Nam Lanh Commune (Sop Cop District) currently has 10 branches and more than 700 members. Every year, the Association promotes propaganda and mobilizes members and farmers to actively participate in the movement "Farmers compete in good production and business, unite to help each other get rich and reduce poverty sustainably", thanks to which more and more typical examples of good production and business appear.
In addition, the Association also coordinates with the district's professional agencies to guide farmers in converting crop and livestock structures, applying scientific advances in production; creating conditions for members to participate in programs and projects to support poverty reduction and preferential loans. To help farmers have capital to develop production and livestock, the Association has coordinated with the district's Policy Bank to implement preferential credit programs. To date, the Association has received more than 17 billion VND in trust, lending to more than 200 member households to invest in economic development.
After attending citrus fruit growing training courses, in 2019, Mr. Vi Van Thao, Long Tong village, borrowed nearly 50 million VND in preferential capital from the District Policy Bank to renovate 2 hectares of sloping land to grow oranges and tangerines. Thanks to the application of science and technology, the entire fruit tree area has grown well. In 2024, the family harvested more than 12 tons of oranges and tangerines, earning more than 200 million VND.
In addition, Mr. Thao also participates in the Professional Farmers Association for planting and caring for fruit trees, the group has 17 members, growing 10 hectares of oranges and tangerines. The group's activities mainly provide guidance on plant care techniques, choosing suitable varieties and fertilizers; sharing production skills and experiences. Thanks to that, productivity and product quality have been improved, the income of members reaches 100-300 million VND/household/year.
Thanks to the movement of farmers competing in good production and business, which continues to develop strongly in both scale and quality in localities, it has helped to arouse the initiative and creativity of farmers who dare to think and dare to do. Through that, many members have risen up to escape poverty and become rich legitimately, contributing to socio-economic development and new rural construction.
