"The US has used the fentanyl issue to exert tariff pressure and blackmail," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a press conference on February 28.

"This action has created a serious impact, exerting pressure, coercion and threat to the dialogue and cooperation between the two sides in the field of drug control," Mr. Lin said of the US tariffs, warning that they would be counterproductive.

According to Mr. Lin, the US and China have achieved remarkable results in cooperation on counter-narcotics. He also affirmed that China is the first country in the world to officially control fentanyl-like substances.

President Donald Trump announced on February 27 that Chinese goods entering the US could be subject to a 20% tariff if Beijing fails to address US concerns.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration imposed an additional 10% tariff on all Chinese goods, accusing China of sending fentanyl, a precursor to opioids, to Mexico and Canada, from where it is smuggled into the United States.

Beijing immediately responded with a series of measures ranging from an antitrust investigation into Google to additional tariffs on many key US exports. The new list of tariffs includes a 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG), a 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural equipment, trucks and large motor vehicles.

These moves have raised concerns about a trade war between the US and China, even becoming a global war.
