Ban Me Commune (Si Ma Cai District) has suitable climatic conditions for growing many types of crops and livestock. The commune government has directed the implementation of new production models and the conversion of crop and livestock structures to suit local realities.

In recent years, people in the villages along the Chay River in the commune have converted ineffective land for growing trees to cinnamon. In 2017, Mr. Giang Van Truong's family in Ban Me village borrowed capital to invest in planting more than 1 hectare of cinnamon. After 6 years, his family was able to prune branches and leaves for sale. Mr. Truong said: "I found that cinnamon trees are suitable for the climate, so I planted a few hundred trees on a trial basis. Gradually, I realized that cinnamon trees grow and develop well, so I decided to expand the area."

Up to now, the total cinnamon area of Ban Me commune is 300 hectares. Thanks to the formation of a concentrated production area, many businesses and agricultural processing establishments in the lowlands have come to buy. In addition, the traffic infrastructure in the commune has been invested and upgraded, so the transportation of cinnamon is also convenient. In addition, in the commune, there is also Ban Me Cooperative to support people in purchasing cinnamon and supplying local seeds. The cooperative has more than 30 members with a stable income of 7-10 million VND/person/month and has 2 nurseries supplying the market with more than 200,000 seedlings each year (tau, sua do, xoan ta, xoan dao... and mainly cinnamon). The total revenue of the cooperative reaches more than 1.6 billion VND/year, the profit reaches nearly 400 million VND/year. The cooperative and some households also invest in a pilot line for distilling cinnamon essential oil.

In addition to growing cinnamon, Ban Me commune also develops livestock through implementing a phase transition model of raising breeding cows from long-term support capital according to Resolution 22 dated November 11, 2014 of the Provincial Party Standing Committee. Implemented since 2018, up to now, the commune has maintained 93 pairs of breeding cows in households with a total herd of nearly 400 cows and 115 households have benefited. The commune strives for all households to benefit from the "Cow Bank" project by 2025, increasing the total herd to 1,000 cows.

Since 2020, Ban Me commune has also implemented a fruit tree planting model including grapefruit, jackfruit, mango, apple... on a scale of more than 5 hectares in Coc Re village. Up to now, some households have had income from these crops.

In addition, taking advantage of the abundant water resources, some households have dug ponds to raise fish. Currently, the total aquaculture water surface area of the commune is more than 7 hectares. Notably, a household in Sin Chai village also takes advantage of the pond to create a model of experiential tourism, relaxing fishing, creating additional income in addition to selling commercial fish.

In the commune's highland villages such as Sin Chai and Na Pa, the commune government has mobilized people to implement a model of growing pickled shallots on a scale of more than 3.1 hectares, and at the same time helped people connect with a number of units to collect and consume all products.

Not stopping there, the commune also sent people to learn from experience and experimented with planting the four-season bamboo shoot variety (originating from Ben Tre province) in Ban Me village. If this bamboo shoot variety is suitable for the soil and climate, it may be widely replicated in the commune in the near future.

Many new solutions and directions have been proposed, in which the commune focuses on developing the agricultural and forestry economy in association with commodity development on the basis of promoting local advantages. Regarding new economic models, the commune promotes the exemplary and pioneering role of cadres and party members. Political and social organizations actively mobilize union members and volunteers to help people implement production models. The commune coordinates with specialized agencies of the district to regularly monitor the production situation to promptly remove difficulties and obstacles, and guide people to produce effectively.

Mr. Then Manh Hung, Chairman of Ban Me Commune People's Committee said.

Currently, after reviewing according to the new criteria, the commune's poverty rate is 46.89%. Therefore, the commune's current direction is to focus on a number of models that are suitable to the level, conditions, and farming practices of the people. The commune hopes that the solutions being applied will be effective, helping households, especially those in difficult circumstances, to escape poverty sustainably and people's lives will be increasingly improved.
