When the sun rises, dozens of boats dock, carrying loads of fresh anchovies from My Quang fishing village (An Chan commune, Tuy An district, Phu Yen province).
Unlike other traditional markets, here the fish market stretches along the beach, where the waves roll onto the shore.
This place is known for having many small-capacity anchovy fishing boats, operating for short periods of time close to shore. Every day, fishermen set sail at around 4pm the day before, returning with their catch at dawn the next day.
Anchovies in Phu Yen usually appear 2-5 nautical miles (3-10km) from shore. At the beginning of the year, the weather is relatively favorable, the sea is calm and the waves are calm. If they find the right fish, fishermen can get a high yield.
Each night, boats can catch 1-2 tons. Fishermen said that Ba Lai anchovies are the most popular, with prices ranging from 15,000-20,000 VND/kg depending on quality. Ngan anchovies are rarer, with prices reaching up to 80,000-100,000 VND/kg.
After catching nearly 1 ton of anchovies overnight and returning to the dock, Ms. Pham Thi Hoa shared that compared to previous years, this year had both a good harvest and good prices. With the price purchased by traders at An Chan fishing port of 20,000 VND/kg, Ms. Hoa's boat earned 15 million VND. "After deducting expenses, my family pocketed more than 10 million VND each night," she said.
“The work is hard because we have to work all night, but the income is stable so everyone is happy. Hopefully in the coming days the weather will be favorable so that the boats can go out to sea regularly, catch more fish, and motivate fishermen to stay at sea,” Ms. Hoa added.
A small portion of the anchovies after landing will be purchased by local traders and sent to fresh markets. The rest will be mainly taken to fish sauce factories or steamed, dried, seasoned, packaged and exported to China, Malaysia, etc.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai (orange shirt) - a trader who buys anchovies from fishermen at An Chan wharf, affirmed: "The anchovies used to make fish sauce are fresh, not frozen. Large quantities are needed, I buy all the fishing boats' catches."
When the goods were brought ashore, the women who worked in the transport were waiting to carry and weigh the fish for the traders to transport to sell. Everyone was excited because they had more income.
“There have been a lot of anchovies coming in these days, so my sisters and I carry fish from dawn to noon. Depending on the quantity, traders pay us from 50,000 to 100,000 VND. On average, each person earns 200,000 to 300,000 VND per day,” said a woman.
In Phu Yen, anchovies are caught by fishermen all year round, but the main season is from around November (lunar calendar) of the previous year to March-April (lunar calendar) of the following year. A good anchovy harvest and good prices help people increase their income and are excited to go out to sea.
